With the Xbox Live exclusive launch of Grand Theft Auto: Lost and Damned right upon us, we decided to compose our own list of the 10 best Grand Theft Auto moments so far. Shout outs to the whole Koalition team for contributing to the list.
With the introduction of the Grand Theft Auto series on the Playstation 2 format came much better advanced graphics than that of it’s predecessors. Previously the series had been a top down birds eye view cartoonish style game, which was indeed fun to play but at the same time limited the game and halted the series from being as big as it could. However once Grand Theft Auto 3 arrived in 2001 in full 3d, the franchise took its crown as the best game period and was a constant top seller.
After all those frustrating tricky missions in Grand Theft Auto 3 you finally get your satisfaction by blowing Catalina to hell in her chopper Via the final mission “The Exchange”. To be honest the mission was very easy compared to some of the previous ones leading up to it, all it involves is slaying a good few Columbian Cartel members in cold blood. However knowing that backstabbing bitch would finally die by your hands was enough pleasure, and hey Claude did end up with Maria!
Ahh! The 80’s, how I missed those days where the music was great and it felt like there was nothing in life worth worrying about besides combing out that overlooked dent in your afro. Though I’ll never get to relive those days, I will get to play Vice City again. The game did a great job putting you into the 80’s vibe with the style and the music, Vice City will probably remembered for having the best Grand Theft Auto soundtrack of them all. Also the game had several references to the cult classic movie Scarface, such as the vacant apartment you find full of blood with nothing but a chainsaw there.
Who can forget the mission “Rub Out” where you get to kill Ricardo Diaz and take over his precious mansion, because lets face it, as soon as we was introduced to the character we knew he had to go. It is a simple mission which see’s you and Lance Vance shooting up the place and disposing of all Diaz’s followers, but seeing Tommy and Vance light Diaz up in the end of the mission can do no less than raise your disposition.
On the flip side, Tommy then has to end up defending himself and his mansion in the final mission “Keep Your Friends Close”. Not only does Tommy’s former boss from Liberty City, Sonny arrive, but Tommy’s number two Lance Vance turns on him to join with Sonny himself. Tommy’s only option here is to make everybody “Say Hello To His Little Friends” as he wipes out all all his enemies and is left with nothing but his mansion and lawyer Ken Rosenberg.
The theme of the next Grand Theft Auto would be gang banging in Los Santos (GTA’s Version of LA), but San Andreas was not just one city as it covered a whole state. The game was hugely influenced by the early 90’s gang banging culture in LA and took much of its style from movies such as Boyz iN The Hood and hip hop artists NWA. The game was done well, and you didn’t even have to be a fan of the culture to love this game, as it was just such a huge step up and did well to mix up the scenery and storyline.
Not only do we find out that Carl Johnson(CJ) had Catalina way before she turned into a super bitch, but we also witness the first sighting of Catalina and Claude from GTA 3 together during the countryside race with Woozie. Not only that, but once you find yourself in Las Venturas CJ unites with Vice City’s Ken Rosenberg and Kent Paul not to mention Salvatore Leone. This was a smart and rewarding way to bring back old characters into the series before the game took another next generation revamp.
We cant forget that two more titles found themselves on the psp, the first one revisiting Liberty City with Tony Cipriani as a playable character. The Second was Vice City stories where you play Lance Vance’s brother Victor. These were two nice additions to the series for those who wanted to satisfy their GTA fix whilst waiting on the next official installment, however you didn’t even need a PSP to enjoy these games as they were both released for the Playstation 2 later on anyway.
Hate it or Love it, Grand Theft Auto IV is no doubt a modern masterpiece. The series was catapulted into an excessive approach to realism with the addition of this game which saw you walking the shoes of European Immigrant Niko Bellic who not only seeks revenge from an incident in his past, but also gets caught up in some nasty Russian affairs. The game came under much criticism as much of the many things that made Grand Theft Auto fun in the past were left out, but you still cant deny that the game was a huge step up and that Rockstar probably plan to bring some of the older elements back in future games.
In a 50 million dollar deal, Microsoft secured two Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable packs which was very shocking to many Playstation 3 owners such as myself. The very first one “Lost And Damned” will be available tomorrow and features the storyline of a member of one of Liberty City’s biker gangs. The pack will also feature new gaming mechanics and online modes, so Xbox 360 users get your Grand Theft Auto IV games ready along with your 1600 Microsoft points. Lost and Damned will Certainly bring some more Grand Theft Auto memorable moments, enjoy.
Nice list!
I think the best moments are:
Grand Theft Auto Visits The 80?S
Grand Theft Auto on PSP
Grand Theft Auto Comes to the Hood
Grand Theft Auto IV
yeah man nice list… i disagree with the last one though, i think it would’ve been better for everyone to enjoy those DLC
I am sure it will arrive for PC systems too (Microsoft system), but PS3 users will remain let-down.
I just hope that the next installment is a new Vice City.
Wow are you kidding me? Where is GTA? Like..THE FIRST on psx? That one is still KING, tons of great moments and great missions. All the rest that came after (besides the london, that one was cool) was utter shit.
