12 Rounds: Asher Roth Interview

“Why the f*ck didn’t you let me hear this” – Akon.

“Let me know if there is a record you guys need me on”- Andre 3000.

“OK…OK…You’re nice” -Jay-Z.

That’s right, the new kid on the block Asher Roth has some of the biggest names in Hip Hop cosigning his movement. I first heard him rap when a friend emailed me a few songs off of his latest mixtape “The Greenhouse Effect”, and I knew he would definitely be a force in the rap scene. Why? simply because he was being himself. Many have labeled him as the next Eminem, but I feel like anyone who says that really didn’t listen to his music. The kid definitely has skills and it was only right that The Koalition link up with Asher and go 12 rounds with him to talk a little about video games & his music as well. Interview, Mixtape download & video after the jump…..

When did you first start playing video games?

How great was the game Kid Chameleon?

Has video games ever influenced your music?

Have video games influenced my music – hmmm, interesting question.  In a way i guess you can say they have cause they inspire me to be creative and make “user-friendly” music.  Not to mention i want to get my music on different games.

What games are you playing the most right now?

Mario Kart and Bond on 64

Which next gen console do you like the best? Xbox 360 or PS3 and why?

I haven’t gotten into either – played the Wii a little bit which was cool and all but I stick with the old school systems cause I’m not a new generation gamer.  See me on the power pad, racing Cheetah in Track and Field.

Whats the hardest game you ever played? and did you ever beat it yet till this day?

Hardest game – shoot – I dunno – if its too too hard, i usually just give up.  I never got the hang of Halo – considering the kids i played against were so effing good – i just said eff it – back to Mario Kart.

Do you think video games and hip hop are the blame for violence among teens? do you feel one is worse than the other?

That’ll be an age old debate.  But the bottom line is parenting.  The parents shouldn’t allow anything in the household that they think could influence their children in a negative way.  You think MTV Jams or Grand Theft Auto is gonna impact your kid negatively – don’t allow it in the house.  From my experiences, i know several kids who play GTA and watch rap videos and have never once killed a man or raped a woman.

What artist inspired you to get into hip hop?

The Roots, Blackstar, Public Enemy, Rakim – hip-hop with a message has always inspired me.  It’s a very influential genre and when done correctly can help inspire millions.

You have a lot of major cosigns from hip hop heavyweights such as Dj drama, Akon, Jayz, Andre 3000, the list is pretty long, do you feel the pressure to deliver?

You can’t allow yourself to feel the pressure – that’s when the music becomes forced and manufactured.  I like to make organic music – capturing moods and emotions.  I’m going to continue to do the things that got me here – have fun, make honest music and do it for the love of making music.

Whats the story behind the song “cartoon chick”?

Weed, television and sexual conversation.

Whats the one thing you want people to take away from your music?

I want them to feel something.  Whether its hate, love, frustration, excitement – i just want them to FEEL something.

What can we expect from your album?

Good, honest music.

Any last words?

Much love to all my fans.  I’m nothing without ya’ll.  Thank you!

I honestly have never heard of this dude before, I’ll give his mixtape a listen. If Andre 3000 supports him, he can’t be bad.

His voice is identical to Eminem, but he’s not as funny or as controversial. Not answering “Eminem” when asked “What artist inspired you to get into hip hop?” was a flat out lie, but that’s ok, because he would probably get sued if he did say that. =D

He does have an incredible amount of talent though and Eminem’s career is pretty much over, so I’m cool with it. I’m currently listening to his mixtape and I really like it! He’s gonna be HUGE.

I would love to hear them both do something together, though!
