12 Rounds: Baby Blue Interview

Baby Blue is a female MC from the UK who made a name for herself by releasing music that appealed to both a Hip Hop and a Hardcore Grime fan base. Her two mixtapes Out Of The Blue Volume 1 and Out Of The Blue Volume 2 are certified classics, and the UK has been waiting for her to release an album ever since. She is currently working on her EP which should be expected in March, and an album which should be released later this year.

I recently had the chance to catch up with Blue once again, after barely speaking with her since 2006. I asked her some questions so that all the readers will know that Baby Blue is back on the scene; and for those who have yet to hear what she’s about, this interview will provide you will all the insight you need.

———-

What’s up  Blue, it’s been a while since I heard from you. Have you been working on any new projects recently?

Yep at the moment I’m working on an EP for release in March, and an album to be released later in the year.

Would you say there is an overall message behind your music?

I touch on so many different subjects but I would say that overall my message is that its so important to follow your dreams and that if you really want something you should work as hard as you need to to get there.

Out of the blue 1 and 2 were classic mixtapes in the UK Hip Hop scene, when you look back at them now, how do you feel about that material?

Thank you! The mixtapes were a chance for me to give people a taste of me as an artist and also to develop my sound. My style has changed quite a bit since then but its good for people to see how I’m developing as an artist and grow with me. The tapes have put me into a position to record the album I want to record and that was the point!

What inspired you to make the song “You don’t need a man that much”? I ask because you don’t seem like the type of girl to have relationship issues.

Haha I was inspired to write the song when someone I know was in a situation with a violent boyfriend. He used to physically hurt her but she was just blind to it and still stuck by him saying that she loved him. I was having a conversation with my Mum about it and she was saying to me that she hopes I know that I don’t ever need a man that much, to let him be violent towards me and still stay with him. I felt strongly about that and thats why I wrote the song and it happened to co-incide with the Rihanna/Chris Brown situation.

How do you feel about the state of Uk Hip Hop right now?

I don’t really like to separate the scene because I just see Chipmunk, Tinchy, Dizzee and Wiley as mcs/rappers and I dont like it when people make this big distinction between grime and hip hop. I just see it as different tempos and different sounds but I think it’s all one scene. I’ll spit on grime, hip hop, and any other kind of music that I like. So I think the scene is very healthy and I’m so proud when I see people having chart success and performing on big stages, they’re opening doors for everyone and I think its a really exciting time.

Which artists (in the UK) would you say are doing their thing right now?

Chipmunk, Estelle, Dizzee, Wiley, J2K, Mz Bratt, Ironik, Jay Sean, SAS, Scorcher, Wretch 32, Tinchy, Bigz, NDubz, Tinie Tempah, Goldielocks wow there’s just too many to name.

How does the divide between US urban and UK urban music make you feel?

Nothing’s ever easy and it’s just a bridge that we have to cross but UK artists are doing really well in the States, look at Jay Sean, Estelle, Mr Hudson, so we’re on our way and we can stand next to American artists with our own sound and that’s the way forward.

Do you still keep in touch with a lot of the UK acts you used to roll with, such as Sway, Bigs and other Eurogang MC’s?

Yep I speak to them all the time.

Being that The Koalition is the Video Game and Hip Hop authority, the fans would like to know if you’ve ever had any experiences playing video games?

Of course, Mariokart on the N64 was my game! I was an expert. Also Goldeneye, and Tetris on my Game Boy lol. I know that’s not really whats going on now but I’m not really up to date with it lol. But I know the game of the moment is Modern Warfare 2.

What can fans expect from Baby Blue in the future?

Good music hopefully! My EP is out in March and the album will follow.

Who or What generally inspires you to get in the booth and make music?

I just love it, that’s the best way to describe it. Even if I tried to stop myself I would always come back to it. Writing songs and being in the studio is me.

Thanks for the interview Blue, we look forward to hearing from you again in the future. Feel free to make any shout out’s right here:
