Jay Z once said, “It’s like New York’s been soft ever since Snoop came through and crushed the buildings.” I’m sure my homie Wordspit would beg to differ. Wordspit is a hot up and coming artist from Brooklyn, NY that is putting out quality music to hold New York down. Not only is he an on the rise music artist, but Wordspit is a gamer as well. The Koalition recently had time to chop it up with Wordspit and ask him a few questions about his gaming background and music. Make sure you check out the video of him performing the track, “Joystick Madness” posted on the site as well. The name says it all.
TK: I saw that you copped that Street Fighter IV. Before I challenge you and give you the business, what do you think about the game and what other games are you waiting to get your hands on?
Wordspit: I think they played it safe, even though they revamped the graphics, I felt it could have been slightly better. For one everyone has one super…(come on one super!). They should added new ones on top of the originals they had. Then you can only execute that when u take damage. Maybe I just wanna finish you with a super and a perfect…(totally not cool!). The story mode could of went way harder…(jesus juice). Other than that it’s a winner in my book!!!! The next game I need is the new Resident Evil. The demo was crazy when I played it.
TK: What is the first video game you remember playing as kid?
Wordspit: That would have to be Mario and Duck Hunt memories.
TK: Growing up as a kid, video games and baseball were some of the things I use to keep me out of trouble. How have video games or any other medium influenced you in your lifetime?
Wordspit: Video games influenced me so much. It was amazing to see how people could turn their imaginations into reality. That made me want to find an outlet to express myself even further, but my pursuit of music is what got me off the streets. I was doing a lot of wildness I had no business doing. So when I really decided to take my career seriously, I slowly started to cut the negative things out of my life. Now I’m here doing this dope interview with the Koalition.
TK: Out of the three major video game systems ( Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360). Who do you feel is putting out the best product?
Wordspit: You’re the devil Xbox 360, but it wins with this one.

TK: How do you feel about the Wii. It’s doing these crazy numbers. Why are people in love with it? I don’t see it.
Wordspit: I’m not going to lie, it’s a party starter. I played one game! The game it came with and it’s fun. I can see why people like this game. Your girl, your grandmother, your old uncle in the wheel chair can play this without busting a brain cell which is kinda cool.
TK: I see the video of you rapping the track, “Joystick Madness”. Personally I really like it. What made you put together a track like this?
Wordspit: I wanted to make the coolest bboi stance story people can relate too. My first song and video I dropped off my mixtape was, “Not a Joke This Year”, which referenced a kid in school stepping his game up. When I was thinking of my next track I was like how can I make a song telling MC’s in the game they not messing with Spit, and put it in a story continuity instead of a random song, Then I was like eureka! What did every kid do after school? They went to the arcade. I got over my first hump which was easy. Next I needed a game everyone played. I choose Street Fighter since it is the grand master of fighting platform games. Who hasn’t played a variation of Street Fighter? The hard part now was making this become track the first live audio video game, not be corny, and also not to make some kind of reflection track like so many have done before. All while making you feel like you’re at the arcade. I began scribbling mad things that came to mind when I played this game. After that the homie Jface cooked up the beat and I sat down with him to add what I wanted to make it feel like an arcade experience. He added his in sight. I took the beat home and inserted my coins and now your ears are playing “Joystick Madness”.
TK: I have heard a few of your tracks. I can honestly say you got skills on the mic. When did you finally realize that your rhyming skills were above average?
Wordspit: I first knew it when the old heads who listen to cats like the Wu-Tang, Nas, Rakim, Biz, etc. would look at my appearance and smirk. Then I started spitting and they quickly gave Wordspit the official co-sign. They was like, “Son you got skills. You take me back.” Secondly is when I was destroying MC’s at battles and the crowd would be hanging from my every word…(that’s funny).
TK: You know everybody took the phrase hip hop is dead and ran with it. How do you feel about the current state of the rap game?
Wordspit: I feel its fine. I listen to a lot of hip-hop and I think it has evolved. Now you have people mixing and matching genres…(that’s kinda cool). You can touch more than one set of listeners now. There is going to be hit and misses with any artist, but I’m feeling the state of hip-hop. There is going to be hit and misses with any artist in any genre of music, but hip-hop is not dead.

TK: Before making a track what do you do to get yourself in the zone?
Wordspit: Ha-ha. Unless I have a concept already, before writing a track I listen to the beat and it tells me what to write. Then I hum a melody to find a flow. Then I search for the first line… (it’s always about the first line.) If the first line is wack I don’t waste time and start the process over again.
TK: What new projects from Wordspit can the people be on the lookout for?
Wordspit: The Coolest B-Boi Stance is coming! Featuring Joystick Madness.
TK: What feelings / thoughts do you want people to come away with after listening to your music?
Wordspit: I want people to know this is the soundtrack of their lives and find comfort in my creativity all while knowing we can relate in more ways than one.
TK: Any last words for the readers and your listeners?
Wordspit: Yeah man. Be on the lookout for the Coolest B-Boi Stance and the official Joystick Madness video in the future….(Capcom, send a check. Lol)
