Recently Activision had basically threatened Sony to drop the price of the Playstation 3, to increase the attach rate on the system. This is what is called pressure from third parties, but it has not ever been applied so publicly. Well now another third party company has come out and put the pressure on Sony, wow Sony just cant catch a break in the media.
The Ceo of the newly merged Tecmo Koei let come to light how he wishes Sony would cut the price to increase market share. Kenji Matsubara told CVG “Whenever I discuss this with Sony reps I always ask them: ‘Please cut the price’,”. He then went on to say From a publisher’s point of view we would welcome a price cut for PS3 and we are waiting, definitely,”
“It’s definitely a way of boosting the PS3 market, but it’s Sony’s strategy and I don’t know their cost structure. Sony introduced cutting-edge technology in the PS3, that’s why people in the industry accept that the PS3 cost is so high, but we’d welcome a price cut.” He added.
With all the pressure coming from third party companies, Sony can not ignore the fact that they may be losing momentum. Therefore I am confident that the price drop is coming later this year, possibly with an announcement of a slimmer Playstation 3 model.
