Hello my controller comrades! I wanted to talk to you guys today about what I think will be the top 10 games of 2010. Personally, I think 2010 will be a great year for gamers (yes i know we say that every year) because a) all the systems are beginning to show there full potential, b) the developers are beginning to grasp what each system can do and c) the fans are familiar with each console. So sorta like the College Football BCS ranking system that comes out before training day, I wanted to do my own list of video games that I feel that could be in the running for Game of the Year in 2010.
10) Batman Arkam Asylum II

Rocksteady Studios shocked us at Spike TV’s VGAs with a trailer for this game. Hell, some of us are still playing the first one (this includes me. Hey, don’t judge me! Ive been busy with school, work, kids and other AAA titles). Speaking of the first one, Batman:AA was just awesome. It played like how I envisioned a batman game to play. Able to be surrounded by baddies and still feel in control of the whole fight was just pure joy. It also helped that half the cast that voiced the game is from the batman: animated series (Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamil, Arleen Sorkin, etc.). I am looking forward to the sequel. I hope they add Night Wing or Robin as a playable co-op character.
9) All Points Bulletin

It seems like they’ve been talking about this game coming out for like 4 years now! I just want to see it in action (and not intros and cut scenes). All Points Bulletin (APB) is an up and coming Mass Multi-player role-playing game (MMORPG) That takes place in a modern-day, fictional city where there is a constant battle between “Enforcement” and “Criminals”, and the player will need to decide to which Faction they want to belong. The two sides battle out for control of the city, with territory within the city being contested continually 24 hours a day, so that players must concern themselves with both offensive and defensive moves (Think GTA series with MMORPG properties, come to think about it, Realtime worlds who created the Crackdown IP is making this game). As soon as I heard about this game, Ive been waiting to get my hands on it (BTW Realtime, I’ve apply for the Open beta like 2 months ago.. Where is my God damn invite email??? Ive beta tested every MMO to date. Gimme my invite!) and try it out. Hopefully Realtime Worlds deliver the goods and we can see this game in the top ten for 2010. This game (if done right) might grab the sandbox genre fans to tryout their first MMO. Only time will tell.
8 ) Super Street Fighter IV

I cant wait for this game I’m going to tear up the leaderboards with T.Hawk (yes, he’s mine. All MINE!)! Capcom is coming out with an update to Street Fighter IV. Super SFIV is going to be just that. Super, ten more characters, lobby mode for online play, a replay channel, even the damn bonus stages are back! As for National / international tournaments, I’m gonna try to attend most of them as a player and media personnel (more so as a player). Hopefully I can get my name out there as one of the best.
7) 3D Dot Game Heroes

This game has the potential to be 2010’s sleeper. It looks cute and original. The developers (Silicon Studio) wanted to honor the 8-bit generation and I think they are doing quite well by bringing this game out. As for setting, this game goes through different game modes and even emulated classic games like Zelda, Castlevania even street fighter! I am looking forward for this game, come May.
6) Last Guardian

Team Ico is at it again. They hard at work in the studios making another underrated hit. me personally, I loved the first two games (Ico / Shadow of colossus) from Team Ico and I find it very offensive that people didn’t play this game or even give it credit for what the guys over at Team Ico are trying to do. Create new IPs that are enjoyable and; fun. I for one, am looking forward to the finish product of last Guardian.
5) Final Fantasy XIII

Square Enix is finally delivering a Final Fantasy title on the current gen. systems. I think that this game has the potential to be this generation’s FF7 (seeing that a million copies sold in one day over in Japan last week). The stateside gamers (and the Euro ones as well) will have to wait a bit before we can get our mitts on this gem. My only complaint (already) about the game is why the hell the “brotha” gotta have a baby chocobo in his damn afro?
4) Star Wars: the Old Republic

Before I say anything about this game. I want the whole world to know that I Shelton “Big Shel” Doutherd is a HUGE fan of Bioware. The only developmental company in the whole industry that I can say that I am (takes off rose colored fan boy glasses). Now with that out of the way. I can say that Star Wars: The old Republic (SWTOR)is going to be banging! Why? a) have you played Knights of the old republic (KOTOR)? b) a Star Wars MMORPG that takes place during the great jedi/Sith war! c) Have you played KOTOR? d) SWTOR’s Trailer & e) all the above! Out off all the games coming out next year, I must play and; own this game. By the way, if your wondering about getting in or forming a guild for this game. The time to do that is now! My guild has been around for 9 years (Star wars galaxies, City of heroes, Warcraft, etc.) however we’ve had the SWTOR fraction of the guild ready to go over a YEAR ago! This game will rival WoW for the MMO throne. Yes WoW head’s I said it.
3) Star Craft II

I was kinda “iffy” on putting this one on the list ( I mean this is “its done when we say it’s done” Blizzard after all) but it’s freaking Starcraft II!!! All of the Stafcraft fans (myself included. Cant stand warcraft, yet loves Starcraft. Go figure) are eagerly waiting for this title. Ive seen some of the beta testing video of this game and for the love of the maker, please Blizzard. Please let this game come out in 2010!!!
2) God of War III

The Ghost of Sparta finally makes his debut on the current generation consoles (about time). After the ending of GoWII, a lot of people have been craving for a sequel and Sony is about to deliver. Only thing I will say about this game is this; You know this game is going to be awesome when you see grown ass men walking out of the demo booths speechless. I look forward to this game, and I know Sony is going to give us the goods (considering this is Kratos’s last hurrah).
1) Mass Effect 2

Okay, yes. My undying love for Bioware has made me put this at number one over God of War III and the other games on the list but there are some other reasons as well. #1 have you even played the first one? Best story in a video game, bar none! After I finished the first Mass Effect, I wrote Gene Siskel and told him that he’s “video games can not be art” BS line is just that. BS. Dont get me wrong. The First game had it’s share of mishaps (dumb side quest, not enough side quest, all the buildings look the same in the side quests, etc) however the game’s setting, story and characters were all A plus plus! Mass effect 2 continues the story and #2 you can use your ME one save file and what ever you did in part one alters part two! I havent played a game like that since suikoden series and I am looking forward to Mass effect. reason # 3 is due to the Geth in the picture, Legion. It’s basically a separate entity from the Geth hive mind and wants Shepperd BAD! So I am intrigued by that in itself. I want to know how that will play out. Will Legion be Commander Sheppard’s Khan, Agent Smith, Boba Fett? Or will it be his Spock, Morpheus, Chewie? Can not wait to find out.
So here’s the rankings. Through out the year we can see the ranking change due to newer games being released (or those on the list moving up or down the list). I know some of you my disagree with the list, but I cant please everybody. Besides this is how the BCS pisses everybody off during football season, so I might as well do the same. However my way is inadvertent. This list isnt set in stone. I have a funny feeling there are a few games that will give all ten of this games a run for their money come next year (Alpha Protocol, Diablo III, Dead Space 2, Darksiders, Bayonetta, City of Heroes: going rouge [expansion pack], etc.) however we will see.
