I’m a little late, not because I was unaware of Resident Evil’s arrival on the App Store but because I was late in notifying the visitors of Koalition that Capcom’s beloved franchise has indeed found its way to the iPhone and iPod touch games collection. I’ve been saying this for the longest time: buy an iPod touch. If you’ve already got a cell phone then there’s no use in convincing you to buy a costly iPhone.

But if you’ve got an MP3 player that you use to play music, that’s irrelevant to purchasing an iPod touch. Other than utilising it to check my e-mails, I’ve used it for Skype, Facebook, MSN, music, movies and the countless apps the App Store offers. More recently, Terminator Salvation and NFS: Undercover were released. If that’s not convincing enough, RE: Degeneration, a game based on the CGI-animated ‘movie’ was released by Capcom a few days ago. Despite all the arguments that the iPod touch isn’t a viable gaming platform, it continues to be treated like one amongst the big-name developers and publishers.

Here’s the product description from Capcom that can be found in the App Store:

Based on the recently released CG-animated movie of the same name, Resident Evil: Degeneration uses a true 3D engine to immerse players into this 3rd-person survival horror shooter.

Explore Harvardville Airport, rescue survivors, unlock puzzles and battle an army of undead.

Use your in-game PDA to collect intel, manage inventory and access maps.

“Laser targeting” allows the players to make aimed accurate shots.

Backgrounds, character models and objects are all rendered in full 3D.

Intuitive context sensitive control scheme.
- Action icons pop up as needed.

Accelerometer features:
- Shake iPhone/iPod Touch to “Shake off Zombie” melee attacks.
- Tilt back device to reload.

Truth be told I’ve purchased the game. Don’t expect a review anytime soon, because I haven’t thoroughly played through it yet. But what I can say is that the game boasts archaic controls like every RE game there was, there is and there ever will be. The graphics are good, but not as great as Terminator Salvation’s. But bottom line is this: The narrative’s your typical RE storyline and it’s got controls you may not be accustomed to. So yes, this is Resident Evil for the iPhone and iPod touch. If you own an iDevice, it’s out for $6.99. It comes with an RE4-esque Mercenaries mode too which to me more-than-justifies it’s current price point.
