Capcom Hopes To “Rebuild Trust” With Fans After ‘Splosion Man Rip-Off

It’s not unusual to see shameless clones of console games on Apple’s App Store. Thanks to Gameloft we’ve already had to contend with games “inspired by” Halo, Uncharted, Soul Calibur, God of War and Call Of Duty but it’s Capcom take on ‘Splosion Man that has caused quite a stir amongst fans.

Released last week, Capcom’s ‘MaXplosion’ has been universally panned for being way too similar to Twisted Pixel’s much loved XBLA game. Naturally the notion of “mega corporation ripping off harmless indy dev” has caused an outcry amongst gamers, and rightly so.

Twisted Pixel’s Mike Henry has already called out MaXplosion with a direct; “that game is a complete theft”, while his company’s CEO Mark Wilford expressed his disappointment in Capcom stating; “It just sucks because we’re too small to do anything about it, and I bet Capcom’s counting on that”. To add fuel to the fire, Twisted Pixel also revealed that they had originally approached Capcom to publish ‘Splosion Man but failed to strike a deal.

Today Capcom issued a half-assed “apology” to their fans who were let down by their plagiary but at the same time they placed all the blame on their mobile team, saying;

“MaXplosion was developed independently by Capcom Mobile. Nonetheless, we are saddened by this situation and hope to rebuild the trust of our fans and friends in the gaming community.”
