Spike’s 2009 Video Game Awards kick off on December 12th, but today we don’t complain about the winners. Today we’re gonna complain about the Game of the Year nominations. Here take a look at the nominees:

- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Assassin’s Creed II
- Left 4 Dead 2

Now I can understand Batman, Uncharted 2, and Modern Warfare 2 being nominated for this “prestigious award” but Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin’s Creed II. Both of these games just came out yesterday, now before I go further I know Spike obviously has a deadline in which they no longer accept a game for a nomination but come on. It just so happened that deadline ended when Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin’s Creed II hit store shelves, I refuse to believe that. I love conspiracy theories which is why I’m gonna say that these two nominations were negotiated. Either way, we all know Uncharted 2 will win. Even after all this, I must say I’ll still be watching the show just to see the world premier trailer of Halo: Reach.

P.S. Stop making these award shows look cheesy Spike. You make people think of gamers as fat kids who drink Mountain Dew and eat pizza all day. Oh and please no silver girls this year, just give them a bikini.

It’s a no brainer that Modern Warfare 2 is this weeks number one, gaining 64.7 Million pounds in revenue the first week. Not only did the game shoot to number one, but it broke the record for the biggest launch of any video game ever. Even Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare makes an appearance, charting at number 19. So congrats to Infinity Ward and Activision for creating a monster. Congrats also to Nintendo who saw a 47 percent increase in sales for Wii Sports Resort; but as we’ve come to expect, Wii video game sales go up and down all throughout the year. The full top twenty list is below

 * 01 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
* 02 Wii Sports Resort
* 03 FIFA 10

With Assassin’s Creed 2 only 4 days away from release, Ubisoft has released the full edition of the Lineage short film. The film is suppose to explain the backstory to Assassin’s Creed 2 in detail and prepare you for what’s ahead in the acclaimed sequel. Thus far the marketing campaign has picked up heavily within the last couple weeks and promises to deliver a totally improved gameplay experience over the first game. Here is a brief overview of the synopsis along with video.

Overall synopsis:

When the Duke of Milan is brutally murdered, Giovanni Auditore an Assassin – is dispatched to investigate the crime. His mission: determine who is responsible and why. The answers he uncovers implicate Italys most powerful families reaching all the way back to the Vatican itself. As Giovanni draws closer to the truth, he becomes hunted himself. He must expose the conspirators before he joins their ever growing list of victims This is the Prequel to the Assassins Creed 2 Story.

October 2009 was a pretty good month for gamers, with the release of new IP’s like Brutal Legend and Borderlands. Each console also had its own exclusive title; Wii had Wii Fit Plus, Xbox 360 had Forza 3, and the biggest release this month, exclusively on the PS3, Uncharted 2. With the price cuts still fairly new in the market, can Sony still maintain the lead this fall?

Well Sony had its top spot for a month, but the Wii is back on top. PS3 managed to outsell Xbox 360’s which is what Sony wants most. Now to the software, Uncharted 2 managed to take the number one spot selling 537K. While we’re still enjoying Uncharted 2, 441K people are working out thanks to Wii Fit Plus. At number three is Borderlands on the Xbox 360 which sold a very impressive 418K despite analyst predicting the game to flop. The sleeper hit is here. Halo 3: ODST managed to sell another 271K, a little low for the second month of Halo but it sold its mil considering its an expansion. Forza 3 came in at number eight with 175K sold in just about a week. That’s all I care to point out…..oh wait. Where’s Brutal Legend? Another flop for Mr. Tim Schaffer it seems, we’ll have to see the top 20.

With the release date of Modern Warfare 2 scheduled to launch midnight tonight in the US, it appears that the hype surrounding the game has now resulted in the street date being broken. It was reported that several retailers in certain regions sold reserved copies of Modern Warfare 2 all weekend long. Even though the regular mom and pop shops were expected to conduct this practice, it was shocking to find out that GAMESTOP decided to follow suit as well. The editor of the Official Xbox Magazine in the UK, Jon Hicks, discovered copies of the game being sold and decided to tweet about it.

In traditional form, Infinity Ward reps stated that this is a violation of street date policy and will be met with harsh consequences. I highly doubt Activision would ban selling future COD games from any store especially when their goal is to sell as many copies of each game as possible. What does this sound like to you? A Marketing strategy by Activision to try and build more hype and sales for the title? or an honest error on the part of the retailers to break the date? Even with an announcement like this, one would question why Activision wouldn’t just officially release the game today as opposed to tomorrow. However, if by any chance you reserved COD: Modern Warfare 2 then I would recommend you call to see if you can pick up your copy today. Credit to GamesIndustry.biz for this report

At the Eurogamer Expo we got the chance to hook up with Relentless Studios (who make Buzz for the Playstation 3), and check out their new game Blue Toad Murder Files. Blue Toad Murder Files is a very unique looking murder mystery game which will be available on the Playstation Network exclusively this December. The game will consist of six episodes, which in total will accumulate over 90 puzzles, Whodunnits’, and cross-examinations.

Below I have a fantastic interview with Jade Tidy who represents Relentless Studios, we have a video version but it was ruined due to noise from the expo. So I have worked hard at writing the interview out for all you fans out there. You can still check out the video version of the interview if you wish to however. Also check out the artwork from the game, and thanks again to Relentless Studios.

———-

Gary A Swaby Interviews Jade Tidy of Relentless Studios

Gary A Swaby: Hi jade, we had the privilege of checking out this game yesterday. But could you just tell the fans a little bit about the game.

Jade Tidy: Sure, its called Blue Toad Murder Files. It’s coming out on the playstation network, and will be available in December. You play as a detective; as you begin the game you are having a good time chilling out, until someone gets killed. You then need to figure out who committed the murder. You are introduced to four possible suspects, you then go around the village chatting to the suspects and gathering their alibis. In between this there are puzzles and all kinds of extra clues for the players to figure out.

Gary: That sounds like a very cool concept right there, also unique. Speaking of unique tell us about the art style, because I see it is very fun looking and cartoonish for a murder mystery type of game.

Jade: We made about four or five different prototypes of the game and came up with a bunch of different styles. Then we came up with the sort of Pixar/Disney kind of style and that was a really strong image for us. It was a great job by our artist, and I can’t take any credit for that. It looks great.

Gary: Exactly, I love the art style and the way it looks. So as far as the missions in the game and how the player interacts, could you tell us a little more?

Jade: As a company we like to make games that are easy to interact with, so the challenge should be playing the game aside from actually getting to grips with the controls first. We have controls that are a bit like moving around a board game, so sometimes there’s one location and sometimes there’s multiple ones. So once you pick the location you will then go on to interact with the characters in that specific location. You may then be presented with a scene, and then after that scene you may be presented with a puzzle for instance.

Gary: Just expand on the puzzles for me if that’s ok.

Jade: All the puzzles are different, so they all have their own unique element to them. There is a range of different difficulties on each puzzle, but ultimately it should not be hard for a non gamer to figure them out.

Gary: Ok so would you say this game is very complex, or would you say it’s a very user friendly experience that perhaps a family could enjoy together?

Jade: We really tried to create an element of fun, we don’t try to take ourselves too seriously. We like to work on games where everyone can have fun, so it’s not a serious story where there is lots of blood and gore, it is not that type of game. It’s more about having a laugh as you go along; so it should be a game you could play with your mates, or on a Sunday, or when you have the family around.

Gary: We heard that there will be multiple episodes for the game, so let the fans know exactly how this will work.

Jade: We have 6 episodes in total for the series, two of which come out December the 17th. So you could choose to buy just episode one, or you could buy both episodes together. Then we will be releasing the next four episodes in a similar manner after the New Year. The story continues through, you could play them by themselves as well, you don’t have to play the whole lot. However you will get the full experience if you play them all.

Gary: So is there any chance that the story will continue after the six episodes?

Jade: Maybe not for this particular series, we might move the series to a new location. However we cannot really confirm nothing at the moment, I hope that we will get the chance to though as it has been a great experience for us.

Gary: Ok thanks for your time Jade, the game looks exciting so congratulations. We at the Koalition will let everyone know about the game.

Jade: Are you going to buy it?

Gary: Hell yes, of course.

Jade: (Laughs), thanks guys.

This game is the coolest Indie game to look forward to at the moment, this footage is from the Eurogamer Expo 2009 which we have been covering this past week here on The Koalition. Check out this 5 minute gameplay footage of the game, and also check the latest episode of Gametime to see the interview with Sean Murray the games managing director.

The game had Ruthless kid very excited, and for good reason. The game is dope, so good that you cant even believe it’s an indie game. Joe Danger is an indie game that you would think was a full disk distributed game. Just watch the video to see why.

Here is episode 2 (episode 1 is here) of our Eurogamer Expo special, look out for more interviews and more jokes from Swiff and Ruthless kid. We had a couple more interviews but due to the noise from the expo, the quality of these interviews have been damaged. I’m just very bitter that all Ruthless kid’s interviews came out perfect and mine were ruined. Props to Ruthless on his interviewing skills though, enjoy this episode.

On This Episode
- Joe Danger footage + Interview
- Ruthless plays God Of War 3
- Heavy Rain Footage
- Interview with Split Second game director
- Plus more

Notes:
- The video is around 22 minutes
- There’s a point where it says ruthless is playing gears, it’s supposed to be GOW, oops!

At the Eurogamer Expo one PC exclusive game stood out to me, that was Global Agenda by Hi-Rez Studios. The game was eye catching, and despite it not having extraordinary realistic graphics (going off of Unreal Engine 3 expectations), it still looks very vibrant. Although it is very colorful to look at, Global Agenda is a game that prides itself in the gameplay and the mission, along with being able to co-ordinate with teamwork.

Global Agenda is a fast paced third person shooter MMO which utilizes the Unreal 3 engine, it takes a very futuristic approach which allows for many nice gadgets and technological advances.

In the wake of severe global disaster, the political face of 22nd century earth has changed and player-created factions scheme against each other for power. Traditional full-scale wars a thing of the past, factions must rely on covert agencies, teams of elite special operatives able to seize and defend key facilities. The future of humanity is their battleground, where knowledge is power, technology is a race, and everyone has an agenda.

As you can see the game has a very strong base as far as a storyline, I get the impression that it will be very engaging. The game will allow you to jump in with friends and team up with agencies to topple the common wealth government, which should provide a strong sense of achievement within the gaming experience. If you have a couple of fellow PC gamers to create your own agency (which is basically Global Agenda’s version of guilds) this will surely provide a very fun experience that you will no doubt come back to over and over again.

Game wise you could compare this experience to a franchise such as Unreal Tournament or Quake. It is an extreme player driven world that is only as good as it’s player community. Global Agenda is a seamless multiplayer experience which should provide months of entertainment building up not only your character, but your agencies, advances in technology, weapons, industrial facilities and much more. Remember however that this is not just a third person shooter experience, it is an ongoing MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game.

Global Agenda will be available with a one time purchase package which gives you the main portion of the gaming experience, and in buying this you are never forced into paying a subscription. However the option for a subscription is there for those who wish to take the experience even further. This subscription will give you tons of extra content; such as more customization options, player crafting with blueprints, a mail system, an auction house with bidding and buyouts, and access to Alliance vs Alliance world domination game play and more.

With that being said, watch the interview below with Stew Chisam the vice president of Hi-Rez studios to find out more. Also enjoy the range of images we have for you below in the gallery, and don’t forget you can enter the beta on the Global Agenda website.

This weeks number one in the UK Charts is Football Manager 2010, as you can already tell UK people love their football. Football related titles have been dominating the charts for weeks, so it’s more than expected. One thing that isn’t expected however is the underwhelming performance of the second DLC expansion of Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360, The Ballad Of Gay Tony. The game entered into a disappointing 6th place, below Pro Evolution Soccer which fell to 5th place. So with both GTAIV DLC packs being released, was these two expansions really worth the 50 million for Microsoft?

Speaking of disappointments, how about DJ Hero entering at number 20? I guess the UK DJ scene ain’t as strong as I thought, because people really are not messing with it over here.

See the top 20 charts below.

* 01 Football Manager 2010
* 02 Wii Fit Plus
* 03 FIFA 2010
* 04 Forza Motorsport 3
* 05 Pro Evolution Soccer 2010
* 06 Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
* 07 Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
* 08 Tekken 6
* 09 Borderlands
* 10 Wii Sports Resort
* 11 WWE Smackdown Vs RAW 2010
* 12 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
* 13 Need for Speed: Shift
* 14 Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
* 15 LEGO Batman: The Videogame
* 16 Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box
* 17 Wii Fit
* 18 EyePet
* 19 Super Smash Bros. Brawl
* 20 DJ Hero

More DJ Hero chatter. Seems like things aren’t as good as Activision may have planned out. Turns out the pre order sales for DJ Hero kind of sort of flopped. Well, I wouldn’t say flop, but for a Guitar Hero spin off they have. I don’t think this is a bad thing. DLC will sell this game. You heard it here from me first. The quality and marketing of what mixes and artist they get involved will be the reason for people to pick this game up. Its a slow starter. Who do they have lined up already? And who will they consider? Important questions that this game will live or die by.

Here is a quote from analyst Doug Creutz from his interview with EDGE:

“On DJ Hero, despite some recent positive comments from company management about pre-orders, we remain very cautious about the title’s prospects at launch,” he noted. “A survey of online retailers indicates a demand profile that is well below what we would have expected to see just a few days before launch for a title that was destined to be a big (or even modest) hit. As a result, we are reducing our estimate for DJ Hero Q4 US unit sales from 1.6 million to 600,000, and we are reducing our first year estimate from 2.5 million to 950,000.”

First Disney bought Marvel, and now Nickelodeon are looking like they want to compete in this whole comic book war. Nickelodeon acquired the TMNT franchise for 60 Million dollars. Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are hardly relevant on the comic book scene now a days, they do still have a strong presences as far as cook comic book orientated characters. Nickelodeon has huge plans for the future of the franchise, including a new computer generated TV series and of course another movie which will be produced by Viacom’s Paramount Pictures.

This could also mean more Ninja Turtle video games, as we are in dying need of an outstanding next gen Ninja Turtle game.

Who even knew Nickelodeon had cake like that?

I like to give my props and congrats to EA and the legendary Need For Speed franchise. Today they hit the milestone of over 100 million Need For Speed games sold. Damn, such a huge number. Its safe to say the Need For Speed legacy can be placed along side other big ones such as Mario. Do you agree? Also leave your favorite need for speed game in the comments. Mines has to be Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. Many people didn’t like that one, but I had fun with it.
