Natal, though — the motion offering from Microsoft — not so much. The same studio rep calls Natal a big, buggy mess. “It’s sh*t,” he adds, saying that it just doesn’t work as promised. That it’s slow and that the camera is imprecise, which he notes, is causing some major development woes.

A few surprises on the hardware side of the numbers. The Xbox 360 managed to outsell the Wii, selling 422K, while the Wii 397K. Playstation 3 is not far behind the Wii, selling 360K. A few more surprises were made on the software side. Holding the top spot is Bioshock 2 (Xbox 360) selling 562K units. Mass Effect 2 jumps down to 7th place, selling 246K units. In 8th and 9th place is Dante’s Inferno, which to my surprise managed to chart, guess Super Bowl commercials can work wonders. The PS3 version of the game outsold the 360 version by 20K units, thanks to the Divine Edition offer. And in the 10th spot is Heavy Rain, which is even more surprising that it charted, selling 219K units.

There’s a lot of cover-based shooters out at the moment. But when a guy hunkers down behind something, you’ve just got to sit there and wait for him to pop his head up. Pops up, couple of bullets to his head, pops back down again… and I’m waiting for him to pop back up again?

Bodycount may deliver that crack that gamers have been waiting for. But it takes more than shooting up a enemies cover to make a good game. If Bodycount turns out “F*cking boring”, does Stuart black become the new Denis Dyack?

The video game business has grown and evolved so much that its like Hollywood in many cases (GTA $100 million budget). Often times even crossing over. In 2008 and 2009 the video game industry generated a revenue of 21 billion & 19 billion* respectively. Record sales for the last 3 years placed the game industry in a position to rival and/or shatter numbers put up by DVD, CDs and even box office. Every year the industry seems to break some kind of record showing the amazing growth of an absorbent industry despite the difficult economic times. With the growth of the gaming industry akin to Hollywood in the 60s, landing jobs is actually easier than you may think. Unlike our hoop dreams, game development dreams are very attainable (not taking shots at the NBA, I love them)

Before entering the business its best to know which field is best for you. Do you love to sit home and sketch characters all day? Sounds like a 3d modeler in the making. What if you have all these cool ideas for the last board in Mario? Sounds like a level designer. But don’t forget the industry has grown, so there is a whole other side of the industry that has nothing to do with the actual development. You have marketing, sales, business affairs, customer support, HR & QA (which is held by a 3rd party most of the time). Besides QA most of those positions are filled with people who did NOT go to college for video games, they are NOT hardcore gamers and they look at working for a video game company in the same light as working for any big corporation. Having a passion for games will help you excel in those fields so I strongly recommend it for the person reading this with limited to mild video game interest and plans on going to a normal college. The chance of you landing a job in the “none development” field is very likely don’t worry.

Game development

Game development has 5 branches

• 1.DESIGN
• 2.PRODUCTION
• 3.PROGRAMMING
• 4.ART
• 5.AUDIO.

Just to give you a break down of avg. salary** it goes like this 1st Programming $83k 2nd Production $78k 3rd Audio $73k 4th Art $66k 5th Design $63k

I strongly advise choosing your field carefully, yes programming will guarantee you $80k pretty much anywhere you go but it’s a pain in the ass because the language is very anal (yes I know dev c++ helps with errors)

…looks fun huh. Guess what happens if you forget a “greater than” sign? GLITCHES! Then your ass will be looking through code all night trying to patch it before thekoalition.com writes a story about how your game sucks. Again programming is very anal. It’s like learning another language because it is (mixed with math).
To prevent from making this article exceptionally long I will skip the other 4 branches because they are pretty much as they read (art includes animation). Instead I want to give you some of the top schools in the US for game development.

College

Art institute of Design(various) -I like this school a lot because they focus on a wide range of the game development field. I personally learned 4 out of the 5 branches of gaming there.90 % job placement rate.

The Academy of Art(SF, California) – The rival school of the Art institute (like Duke vs. N.Carolina). Great school none the less!

DigiPen (Redmond, WA) – One of the best schools for low level game programming in the nation. Nintendo frequents there and I’m sure Microsoft will soon as well. Amazing school!

Full Sail (Florida) – This school is more like a “hands on” school. Making a short FMV will be your Homework. I was going to go there but I didn’t want to move to Florida.

Vancouver Film school – Another great one but its in Canada.

No College

As we all know college isn’t cheap and also it isn’t for everyone but guess what, you can still get into the business you love! Through out the multiple gaming events I attend one constant remains… the two most popular ways to enter the business. 1st is through game testing, God of War creator and Eat, sleep and play founder David Jaffe is probably the most famous person to come from testing. Testing is an easy way in the game industry; you get to meet A LOT of important people on BOTH sides of the game development field. All it takes is a lucky day then BAM! your on the development team. Since these jobs don’t require ANY college (I think even a GED will do) it doesn’t pay as much. You’re looking at around $12 an hour in California. This kind of job is highly recommended for young people without kids and/or rent.

The 2nd easy way in is through journalism. You talk with these publishers and developers so much you know the product as well as anyone else and they recognize that. 2009 IGN Editor in Chief Jeremy Dunham joined MANY others in making the jump from journalism to development. In 2010 you don’t need a college degree to write about games. There are so many good gaming websites looking for passionate people to write original articles. Sites like blogspot.com allow you to create your own blog and write away. Don’t be discouraged if you have a low amount of hits and 0 comments. Just remember two things 1. In due time if you promote properly your numbers will grow 2. All your work is part of your portfolio which in Video Game development is better than a degree. Let’s say you land an interview with IGN or Game Informer, once they sit down and see your amazing work on your blog they wont judge you by your hits but by your content.

The last way without a college degree (besides getting a hook up) is to just do everything yourself. Whether that’s teaching yourself (one of the 5 branches) or to assemble your own team. This step is by far the hardest in my opinion because it involves a lot of risk and discipline. Making independent games like James Silva did with the Dishwasher can help. Also look for development tools that involve little to no programming….oh yeah mods are also great!

This seems to be a classic example of big bank takes little bank (the one with the most money pwns). Activision has propelled itself as one of the premier publishers in the video game industry, and they are bound to do what is best for their stakeholders. I guess bulling the Infinity Ward staff would be part of the part of the job as well. There will be more to report on this story later, but for now who’s side would you take in this dilemma. So to answer my own question “is it ok to brag about it?” Yes. Games like Splinter Cell are not mutiplayer havens. So if they come along and mention games such as Left 4 Dead and others as inspiration I can’t be mad at them. I’m actually waiting for the end result now, which I didn’t care much for prior to this quote.

I recently had the chance to catch up with Molyneux, to conduct an interview. It is one that I was very excited about. In the interview Peter talks about new additions that will be seen in Fable III, along with some general thoughts on the gaming industry. We have also provided some Fable III screen shots for your enjoyment. So without further ado, here is The Koalition’s interview with Mr Peter Molyneux.

Many people question Rare’s position with Microsoft, and also the fact that Bungie is currently only working on Halo titles. Yourself and Lionhead seem to
have more freedom, could you comment on this?

When we were acquired we really remembered our experiences when EA acquired Bullfrog so we were very careful to make sure that Microsoft knew how we worked and for us to understand how they liked to do things. Also although this sounds a bit sickly being nice people to do business with also goes a long way. Because everyone entered into the acquisition carefully but positively it has ended up working very well for both parties

So Fable 3 was announced at Gamescon last year, and ever since we have all been anticipating some new information, is there anything you can tell us about the current plans?

We just made a big announcement about Fable III and we are taking big steps to change what people think of the Fable series you can expect more drama and more uniqueness and so we have introduced some new game play mechanics – a feature called touch which allows you to reach out and touch other characters and objects. Also we have completely re-designed the combat system and indeed a great many other aspects of the game. Perhaps the most significant change is that you as player can become the King or Queen of Albion and once you are ruler you are then answerable to your subjects.

A few of the fans wanted to know if Theresa holds a strong significance to Fable franchise, could you elaborate on that?

Theresa was a an important force in both Fable and Fable II. I can tell you her story will continue in Fable III. She was one of the Fable characters that we war most passionate about from the very start .

What ideas are currently going in to Fable III to separate it from other western rpg’s out there at the moment?

We have changed the combat system and redesigned the way you fight I’ll boldly say the third iteration is certainly the most accessible and distinctive iteration to date ( but of course I would say that !) We have introduced touch which allows you to touch people, drag people, follow people and romance them all with this feature We have redesigned customization meaning you can customize yourself and everything you own, you can craft your own weapons and these will morph to reflect what you are like . We have also introduced extreme morphs which will truly reflect what you are like as a player and much much more

 

Greg Zeschuk of Bioware recently said that JRPG’s are beginning to lack innovation, could you share your thoughts on this issue?

JRPG’s have always been undeniable beautiful and well crafted although personally I find them somewhat confusing and lacking in originality but I am sure there are many millions of people who would totally disagree with me .

When you create a western based rpg, do you try to appeal to eastern regions as much as you can. Or is it that your culturally doomed from the get go, because they just wont embrace it to begin with?

I think when you consciously set out to try and create a game which is going to appeal to all cultures and people of all ages you are just going to end up tying yourself in knots . However there is an interesting ideas of doing conversion of something like Fable to have a more eastern flavour. For example Asian audiences seem to prefer less beefy, muscled heroic types of characters and this is something such a conversion could address.

Going back to Fable III specifically, will we see a return of guilds? If so will they play a part in the multi-player aspects of the game (if any)?

The Guild does feature again as we have something called the Guild Chambers which holds much of the power of XXX, this will also feed into multi player co-op.

You had a lot of plans for the first Fable game, and they could not all be implemented. Do you feel like you and the team will reach your ultimate
vision this time with Fable III?

We’re certainly refining what we think of as Fable . Even though it’s only been two years since Fable II the changes we making this time around are far more significant than the changes you saw between fable and fable II. Essentially we’re working through a list of the features which players found confusing in Fable II. It seems that over 50% of the people who played Fable II used less that 50% of the features available to them so in essence Fable III will be the ultimate iteration but don’t think by that that I mean last !

I know you can not comment too much on Project Natal, but what are your general impressions on the technology?

The tech is pretty impressive and it allows us to do things that even Sci-Fi writer would have struggled to imagine

What advice would you give to upcoming developers trying to make it in the industry?

This is an incredible industry to work in my advice would be know what you want , find out what you’re good at, choose your project carefully and stay passionate

Recently the UK government denied the game industry tax breaks, even though the industry generates more revenue than the government aided movie
business. What are your thoughts on these politics?

The Games industry is an invaluable part of the world wide entertainments industry but it seems to me that the governments view of it is shaped by just a few titles Personally I wish governments all over the world would focus more on the positive social side of gaming

On the hardware side, the Wii outsells all with 465K units sold. The year of the Playstation is not off to a good start. The PS3 was out sold by the Xbox 360 by around 50K units. In order to sale hardware you need software, and it was only right that the top game be New Super Mario Bros Wii, selling 656K units. The highly anticipated Mass Effect 2 came in at number two, selling 571K units. Modern Warfare 2 continues to sell on both consoles. In the eight spot is Army of Two: The 40th Day, selling a solid 246K units. In the tenth spot is Darksiders doing better than I expected, selling 171K units. One thing I fail to understand is why Bayonetta isn’t in the top ten? It had the whole month to sale and it had way better and more marketing than Darksiders did. Sega just can’t catch a break.

Earlier today, Activision had their earnings call and reported some great financial numbers that the men in suits would be happy about. Modern Warfare 2 was the Avatar of the video game industry last year, and despite what you heard, DJ Hero was the highest grossing new IP. In 2010, Activision hopes to find the same success with, well the same games they always release. A new Spider-Man game, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, and of course, another Call of Duty. The plan for Activision is to collect money, but Guitar Hero and music games in general are at a downhill, Spider-Man games haven’t been good since forever, and Tony Hawk Ride flopped. And I can assure you that the next Call of Duty will not be Modern Warfare 2 like, unless Infinity Ward is behind it, which I doubt. Activision will be taking a few risk this year with the releases of True Crime, Blur, Singularity, and some more Bakugan games for A.B. Frazier.

Where is my DJ Hero sequel?

It was also noted that Microsoft denied the shipment because they feared that if the general public found out that their children we’re playing the same military simulations that the army were, then it would harm the systems reputation.

In my opinion Microsoft are already wealthy enough to excuse the fact that the troops may not be as active as usual consumers. Also if they are worried about what the media may think, then why not run a fully fledged campaign alongside the troops, to show how Microsoft is loyal to it’s country. That kind of press always seems to bring positive outlooks to all American citizens.

This is another scheme that has been known in the retail industry for years but most people just looked at it as business as usual. What usually happens is you sign up for an offer and over time they nickel and dime you with hidden fees.

GameStop is one of 22 retailers being investigated by New York’s Attorney General, accused of deceptively luring customers to sign up for discount membership programs via its online store.

According to Attorney General Andrew M Cuomo, unsuspecting customers are linked to external membership sites in order to obtain advertised discounts or cash-back offers.

The customers are then prompted to enter credit card information, while the details about what they’re signing up for is buried in small print. Joining up to these schemes often results in small, recurring charges subsequently being taken from the customer’s bank account.

“This online scheme has impacted the finances and tried the patience of tens of millions of consumers nationwide. Well-known companies are tricking customers into accepting offers from third party vendors, which then siphon money from consumers’ accounts,” said Cuomo.

GameStop is just one of the retailers subpoenaed by Cuomo’s office, alongside other well known chains such as Barnes & Noble, Ticketmaster.com and Pizza Hut.

Three program sellers also being investigated reportedly bring in revenues in excess of $1 billion per year, much of which Cuomo said is amassed through fraud.

Online movie ticket retailer Fandango has been the first of the companies to agree to end the practice of sharing customers’ information with the discount programs. It also plans to pay $400,000 into a customer redress fund.

“I commend Fandango for doing the right thing by ending the practice of sharing consumers’ financial information with these discount club sellers. I expect the other businesses to follow Fandango’s lead and adopt these reforms to protect consumers who shop online,” commented Cuomo.

This only a handful of tactics that Gamestop uses to get their profit margins in a more favorable light. But I digress. Some of the retailers mentioned have worked on improving these practices. However more needs to be done when these companies choose profits over making sure the customer get more for their money.

For the 3rd time, I just finished God Of War Challenge Of The Gods, got my chef of war outfit unlocked! About to finish God Of War 2 for the 3rd time and God Of War 3 can’t come fast enough!!! I like your question so much that I promise if given 13 more episode after this run of shows, I’ll have one themed for gamers only. But just so you know, non greasy finger foods is what I do. Pizza works too, but I must be honest, I can play for hours and not eat or drink a bit. It’s all encompassing sometimes, don’t you think?
