This generation is defined by DLC, patches, and special/limited edition game releases. For $99, you can own the special edition of Bioshock 2 to go in your special edition games cabinet. The Bioshock 2 Special Edition package is packed full of content. You get the game of course, three posters of ads found in Rapture, a hardcover artbook, a vinyl LP of Bioshock 1’s orchestra score, and the cd soundtrack to Bioshock 2. If you don’t have a special edition games cabinet, now might be the time to get one; putting the games on top of the TV like I do is an option as well.

I wish I could get Koalition editor Richard Bailey to insert an “Uh Oh” right here. In a recent presentation it was revealed that Sony plan to implement some kind of subscription service for PSN to generate revenue. However do not worry as Kaz Hirai was quick to come out and let us know that playing online will remain completely free.

Below is a direct quote of the plans they may have from this subscription service.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said the SCE boss.

“Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

Take it how you will; but all I have to say is, I don’t see many people buying a subscription if they can still play games online free of charge.

Attention to our readers from Brazil. It’s time to retire your SNES or whatever you’ve been gaming on for the past 20 years, because today in your territory Sony has officially released the future of all video game hardware… the Playstation 2 (PS2).

For only R$799 ($465) you can pick up the world’s most successful console to date, with a library of over 2000 titles including Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3 & The Simpson: Skateboarding. The PS2 is truly a revolutionary piece of hardware but don’t take my word for it, here is an excerpt from article from CNN written in 1999.

The PlayStation 2 will be powered by a microprocessor faster than those found in the most advanced PCs and will be capable of providing motion-picture quality images, according to the Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Simbun. The console will use DVDs to store data. This will result in a storage capacity nearly eight times that of the CD-ROMs currently used by PlayStation machines. Sony is the world’s dominant console-gaming company, PlayStation 2 is claiming to be able to handle 50 times more 3-D image data than the Dreamcast, allowing it to create characters similar in appearance to those in the Walt Disney film “Toy Story.”

Considering “Toy Story quality graphics” has yet to be achieved in the rest of the world (even by the PS3), I think it’s safe to say you’re getting a huge bargain. Now excuse me while I step 9 years into the future…

With all the recent talk of Modern Warfare 2 smashing every sales record known to man, its refreshing to hear that some other titles may still have a chance of success this holiday season. VGChartz estimates that New Super Mario Bros Wii has sold an impressive 550,000 units in the US within its first 24 hours on sale and is on track to reach the 800k mark in week one. Assassins Creed II is also trending high with a combined total of almost 530,000 pre-orders and Left 4 Dead 2 isn’t too far behind with over 275,000 pre-orders on the Xbox 360 alone.

Remember, these numbers are based solely on pre-orders so take them with a grain of salt until the NPD Group releases ACTUAL figures in just over 3 weeks. I’ll be very interested to see just how many people actually pick up Tony Hawk: Ride for $120.

The first Kane & Lynch didn’t live up to what people expected much. But with this much needed time and more money I assume from Square Enix, they will be back to make this game what it was supposed to be. The sequel titled Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be a different experience according to the release. And with games like Uncharted 2 setting the bar high with movie like theatrics, I fully expect this game to surpass it. Keyword: expect. Meaning if the game does not live up to expectations its time to call it a wrap. Don’t you think? Full press release and video teasers below.

GAMING’S TWO MOST NOTORIOUS CRIMINALS REUNITED IN KANE & LYNCH 2: DOG DAYS
Sequel to 2007’s Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Introduces ‘Never Before Seen’ Visual Experience and New Fragile Alliance Multiplayer Modes
Wednesday 18th November/…IO Interactive, part of Square Enix Europe is pleased to confirm that Kane & Lynch 2™: Dog Days is coming to PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC in 2010.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is a raw and brutal crime shooter designed to take players on an even more intense story experience, following two of gaming’s most disturbed criminals, through the gritty Shanghai underworld.

Introducing a new visual experience, Kane & Lynch 2™: Dog Days is inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era. Every aspect of the game has been designed to deliver a fresh perspective to the words ‘intensity’ and ‘realism’ in video games.

“Gamers are always looking for something new and that is exactly what they are going to get with Kane & Lynch 2™: Dog Days,” said Niels Jørgensen, general manager of IO Interactive. “A special thanks to gamers worldwide for their feedback. They are certainly in for a shock as we, with immense pride, welcome back our two dear, violent and somewhat unfortunate friends.”

Kane & Lynch 2™: Dog Days will be released on the EIDOS games label and will be coming in 2010.

The Facebook update (3.10) is to be released at some time today for the Playstation 3. This comes one day after the official release of the Xbox Live Facebook, Twitter and Last FM update. Many people will look at this as a jack move, but I do not see it that way. Facebook, Twitter and many other social sites have been plastered on other services for a long time now. Ever since these sites offered their API they have been plastered across many websites, it was only a matter of time before the craze came to consoles as well. It just so happened that Xbox was the first to get it integrated.

And plus don’t forget that Playstation 3 users have always had access to these social services, via the browser. The Playstation 3 integration will not only allow you to see your pictures on the xmb, but you will also be able to show updates of your trophies and events that happen within your games.

So don’t be suprised to hear twitter come to the Playstation 3 next, and also I am almost certain these applications will come to the Wii.

Yes you did read the title correctly, it seems that Capcom has struck a deal with GameStop to bring you an exclusive Albert Wesker skin for Lost Planet 2, but only on the condition that you pre-order the game at GameStop. Along with the exclusive Wesker skin you will also receive a shiny new revolver to add to your weapon locker. Capcom say the Revolver is a nimble yet extremely powerful firearm that will help players hone their “one shot kill” skills.

If you want to get your Wesker on in Lost Planet 2 you can pre-order the game at GameStop right now.

Before you say what about my region, Capcom have only announced this deal in America but i think we should see similar deals at big video game retailers around the world in the coming weeks.

More importantly, the ugly friendlist boxes can now be changed. The video doesn’t talk about all the features of the update. They will be disclosed at a later date, but to answer your question in advance, in-game cross chat is still missing.

Since the release of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward has been praised for redefining the scope of the FPS franchise by trading in the traditional World War II landscape for a more modern day approach to combat. Now in the highly anticipated second installment of the series, Modern Warfare 2 attempts to add to earlier successes by promising more memorable campaign experiences and an unrivaled multiplayer system full of unlockables. Here are a few reasons why this game is worth enlisting in.

Campaign & Gameplay:

Modern Warfare 2 takes place 5 years after the events of the original game. By now the efforts of the United States Marines against terrorism have fallen significantly short allowing the Ultranationalists to seize command and control over Russia. The main protagonist of the game is Vladimir Makarov, a former lieutenant who now gets his kicks by setting up several terror attacks throughout the globe. You begin the game from the perspective of U.S. Army Ranger Private Joseph Allen stationed in Afghanistan during an intense war. Just as in the previous game, you gradually shift command of up to five different characters at specified points and times in the story. While the aspect of having intertwined storylines adds to the core plot, the execution of this technique fails to offer a complete campaign experience. There are several loose ends that aren’t fully examined and give the impression that these explanations were purposely left out for Modern Warfare 3. An example of this theory comes within the controversial airport level, which by now has created a media frenzy. In this scene you assume the control of Private Allen while being undercover and lead by Makarov in a shooting spree at a nearby Airport. While the inclusion of this scene brings to light intense issues and suggests discussion on the topic of terrorism, it fails to serve justice to the culprits involved. As you progress through the game there is never a final confrontation between Makarov, which is a big reason why this level stands out. In traditional cinema it is always believed that sooner or later the villain gets what’s coming to him and unfortunately that’s not the case in this story. Likewise, there is also curiosity left over as to what happened to the characters of other units that you play in. One can argue that single player campaign shouldn’t be the focus of any COD game, but with a hot topic such as terrorism you can’t help but want to see a definitive resolution to the conflict. Add in the fact that this mode will only take you 5 hours to complete and you’ll feel as through there is still plenty more that could have been explored to lengthen the overall experience.

When it comes to gameplay, Modern Warfare 2 continues to shine in this department. The control mechanism is easy to get used to and is intuitive enough that even someone who has never played a cod game will be right at home with this one. You’ll easily be guided through each objective by the use of a numbered checkpoint system over a traditional map. The added military talk personnel adds to the effectiveness of capturing quality sound that keeps the environments real and engaging. An array of weapons from assault rifles, to duel wielding pistols is at your disposal and keeps the gunplay highly enjoyable and rewarding. The A.I. within the campaign is a bit dulled down even at the highest difficulty level. It’s worth noting that you’ll find the steepest challenge once you decide to play against competitors online. The graphics are also vastly improved which ranks this entry in the series a step above the original. The best display of this notion is expressed by the many locales you visit throughout the campaign including Washington D.C. and Rio De Janeiro to name a few. Even the amount of damage you can inflict upon each stage is impressive. You can tell Infinity Ward wanted to create the world on a much more grander scale and they should be applauded for there efforts this time around. Once you finish the campaign mode, you’ll be given the option to play the new Spec Ops Mode. This is a mode that allows you to play through several missions and challenges either by yourself or cooperatively with a friend. The inclusion of this feature adds further value to the package by encouraging you to replay every mission until you have successful captured all 69 stars.

Multiplayer Madness:

Modern Warfare 2’s bread and butter remains in the highly competitive online multiplayer experience. Just as in the previous entry in the series, you have the ability to create customizable classes by choosing your primary and secondary weapons, special grenades, tactical perks like Air Strikes, and improved combat techniques. Every time you play through a match you gain points based upon your individual performace. These points are then used to not only raise your player ranking but also to unlock upgraded weapons and attacks that you can use in any given match. The overall system is insanely balanced in the sense that there are always ways to counter attacks with the improved Killstreak options. There is also the ability to change Callsigns, emblems, and clan titles in the pre-match lobby to create a deeper sense of authenticity. The package contains a total of 15 multiplayer maps with the promise of more to drop in spring of 2010. There are also several match types to choose from like Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch. My only complaint about the mode is that until you unlock the ability to choose your respawn destination, you’ll find yourself dead in the middle of multiple shootouts. Certain maps offer places to hide while others lack the range of options necessary to get the upper hand on your opponents. For example, the airport terminal map is one stage that constantly keeps you highly susceptible to high death counts. Many will argue that these instances will force you to step up your gaming aesthetics when going online. Overall, the multiplayer mode is highly addictive and one of the most engaging reasons for high replayability.

Final Verdict:

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 does an excellent job of portraying the harsh realities of war in our society. When compared to other First person shooters, it sticks to the core roots of gameplay that made the first one a hit. This concept doesn’t make it revolutionary but instead just keep things as expected. While the campaign needs a deeper sense of completion to fully convey the message, its clear that Infinity Ward has gotten people thinking about the delicate issues of terrorism as it relates to our everyday lives. The Spec Ops and Multiplayer Modes offer a meaty package that is sure to own your nights for hours on end. Ultimately if you were a diehard fan of the original Modern Warfare, then chances are you don’t need a more compelling reason to pick up this game. However, if you are considering making this your first venture into the series then I recommend this is one war you don’t want to miss.

I’m barely like 4 hours in, that’s due to my decision to fly to the states this week though. Dragon Age: Origins included DLC upon launch and as you can see it has been very successful. Just remember that Bioware have promised 12 months of DLC for this game, so Dragon Age fans better hold onto every penny from now.

It looks like Tony Yayo’s gaming skills aren’t half as good as his rap skills (Those last few mixtape’s were fire). Ice T on the other hand plays games on the regular; and as Yayo says in the video, “he be playin with Xzibit n them”.

Whilst many of you are no doubt staying up until the early hours of the morning due to MW2-syndrome poor Wii owners have just now entered in to the Modern Warfare saga with the release of the first game finally arriving on the Wii 2 years late.

If you’re even a little curious as to how well the Wii version holds up against it’s HD counterparts the fine folks over at Eurogamer have released a video showing a side-by-side comparison of Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare running on both the Wii and PS3. I must say, Trey-Arch has done a great job recreating MW graphically but after spending roughly 15 minutes with the game myself I just couldn’t vibe with it . Maybe it’s the inaccurate controls, or the fact that my character feels he’s constantly crouching or maybe I’m just not interesting in playing under-powered ports of games that I’ve already played and didn’t enjoy in the first play, who knows.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare – Reflex Edition is in stores now.
