During E3 I got the opportunity to sit down and check out a demonstration of one of Bioware’s new and upcoming RPG titles by the name of Dragon Age. Teaming up with EA who will be the publishers, I told myself as soon as I sat down, “If this is coming from the makers of Mass Effect and Knights Of The Old Republic then it cant possibly disappoint”. For the most part I was very impressed by the demonstration, and will most likely be purchasing this game. But with very stiff competition, will this game arise on the shelves as a Hit game, or will it be hugely slept on?

Bioware have described Dragon Age to be a dark heroic fantasy story that will be told with a number of mature themes. Indeed when we got the chance to have the game demonstrated to us, we were introduced to many mature themes within the story. Dragon age gives you the opportunity to treat the people around you however you wish, but depending on how you may treat your party, you may just open up new parts to the story or new missions. One of the choices presented to the main character Duncan during the demo, was to either break the heart of one lady that he has apparently made fall in love with him during the course of the adventure, or refuse another hot ladies lust for you, who may just have a lot to offer you if you act upon her lust. So as you can see, you are faced with highly difficult moral decisions throughout the game, and whatever your action may be, will have a long term effect on the adventure.

For a medieval type setting (which has been done again and again in rpg’s) this game seems to offer much more depth than many before it. Of course it’s completely different to the likes of Elder Scrolls, because Dragon Age is more of an action rpg, but it just so happens to include a lot of interesting dialog and story pathways. I would say that Dragon Age does very well to give players a perfect balance between different styles of RPG gaming. You have the elements of freedom and character development, fused in nicely with elements of action, adventure and humor.

So while we all wait for Bioware to deliver the goods with Mass Effect 2 and Knights Of The Old Republic 3, Dragon Age seems like it could be a sleeper hit that will have us slaying dragons while we wait for Bioware’s more high profiled RPG titles. It’s slick, its got humor, its got action, and It has enough depth to please the more hardcore RPG gamers. With that being said, don’t sleep on this hidden gem which will arrive on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on October 20th.
