With the holiday season wrapping up and the start of the new year just a few days away, I decided to research how games sold throughout 2009. However, what I found instead was an interesting article on the high piracy numbers of some of this years most acclaimed titles. Not surprisingly Modern Warfare 2 claimed the coveted #1 spot making it one of the most pirated games of 2009 on both the PC and Xbox 360. Torrentfreak.com offered this comprehensive take on the matter:

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said commenting on the game’s success. This is, of course, reflected in the number of pirated copies being traded on BitTorrent.

With 4.1 million unauthorized downloads of the PC version alone, the game more than doubles the achievement of last year’s ‘winner‘ Spore. Modern Warfare 2 leads both the PC and Xbox 360 lists, by a landslide.

The overall trend across all platforms is that, unlike last year, all of the games are 2009 releases. What makes Modern Warfare 2’s chart-topping even more impressive is that this has been achieved after just two months of availability. We further see that the figures for the most downloaded titles have more than doubled compared to last year, equaling the growth in uTorrent users.

PC Game Downloads on BitTorrent in 2009:

Xbox 360 Game Downloads on BitTorrent in 2009:

1) Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (970,000)

2)Street Fighter IV (840,000)

3)Prototype (810,000)

4)Dirt 2 (790,000)

5)UFC 2009 Undisputed (720,000)

One of the most interesting things about this list is the potential trends that can follow well into 2010. It’s no doubt that Modern Warfare 2 was one of the most hyped games to launch this year causing many other companies to push back their own release dates to avoid the competition. I would expect to see Mass Effect 2 and Super Street Fighter IV to be added to these numbers next year along with a few other AAA titles. It’s also worth noting that New Super Mario Brothers Wii made the list for most downloaded Wii game but this is hardly surprisingly seeing how it was the only new Wii game out this fall.

   This is another reason PS3 sales are always behind….
   if PS3 was hackable all the bums out there DL games, would had got one right away to play the hot exclusives for free or to have the option to DL games if they run into financial issues.

   Millions of DLs, that's fucking crazy, and people think these Pirate bums are not making an impact?
   I got a feeling game prices will go up because of this, these companies need to get money they would lose from these bums, so they make the real gamers pay extra, don't get it fucked up that extra 10 bucks jump is not to make the games better its to combat pirate bums.
