I remember when I was younger, I used to go to the supermarket around the corner just to get a peek at the latest Gamepro cover. I remember filling out 12 month subscription cards and selecting the “bill me later” option on Nintendo Power even though I didn’t have any money (haha).  Those times are gone now because of the Internet. Instead of subscribing to a magazine a lot of gamers especially the younger ones are now subscribing to RSS feeds. With the latest EGM news things are not getting better.

EGM’s publisher Ziff Davis may be soon searching for an online only solution for the magazine. Its really not hard to see that gaming magazines like EGM are being “1upped” by online sites (no pun intended). Gaming blogs like Kotaku, Joystiq, and Destructoid are quickly becoming the alternative to print. Why subscribe to a magazine when I can get everything I need like editorials, reviews, news, screens, and videos at an even faster pace? Gaming blogs are the fast food of the industry.

A study by the New Zealand Herald revealed that ”In America there are 25 per cent less traditional journalists then there were ten years ago and this is blamed on the convergence of Web 2.0.” You know when you see somebody doing a job that looks easy and you say, “I can do that!” That’s whats happening now with the game industry, thousands of blogs including this one are eager to share opinions and get a fan base from it.

So Is the web replacing print? Yes, a huge percentage of it but not all of it. People will still want something physical to save and collect. And whether you believe it or not, everybody is not connected to the Internet. Can print make a comeback? In my opinion that will be hard because like I said earlier that experience I had as a kid with gaming magazines is different from the younger ones today. Younger gamers are not growing up on gaming magazines, they are growing up on the internet. And if your any kind of physical print , you should at least consider a blog or a consistently updated website.

The internet messed things up for a lot companies and industries. Just look at the music industry right now. But at the same time the internet is great to get information on whatever you need, and it gives people like us the chance to have a voice.

    Of course man!
Back in the days too, I used to waste my money on games magazines, even though I didn’t know a particular console.

But now, you can find anything new on the internet! Games magazines often gets linked all the time. Plus what is the point of having an exclusive preview/interview in a magazine when others would have posted scan images/details of it at forums. Don’t forget, by the time you read an exclusive interview/review/preview, the game is just around the corner to be released.

So people, stop wasting your money on games magazines, go to Game Zines and download pdf of a specific console you want. Or simply browse different games site for gaming news.

What ever you will find in a magazine can also be found online!
