Killzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are by far the top First Person Shooters (FPS’s) of 2009, but which one truly takes the cake? Both games have their pro’s and con’s, however Modern Warfare 2 is of course the top selling game of the two. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the better game, but then again that doesn’t mean that Killzone 2 is either. The purpose of this article is to provoke the question upon us, which game really defined first person shooters on consoles last year?

Let me compare a few the aspects from each game, so it will be easier to come to a conclusion.

Gameplay

Killzone 2 was highly embraced for it’s graphical quality, and it definitely delivered in that aspect. Ever since it was first shown a couple years prior to it’s release at E3, people had been wondering if it would really look that good. Guerilla games did not disappoint when the game arrived. What makes it even better was that the game required no install to run, even given the technical beast that the game is. However the game actually would have benefited from an optional install, because there are parts where the game freezes when moving to new areas. What’s more impressive is that the graphics barely even decrease while playing the game online, while most online shooters suffer a huge graphical decrease to accommodate the amount action you will experience playing online. The point remains though that Killzone 2 is a game that is easy to fall in love with graphically, and not many console games matched it in 2009.

Modern Warfare 2 looked as amazing as all the previous Call of Duty games. The Call of Duty series has always been hailed for it’s superb looking presentation, and Modern Warfare 2 did nothing less than impress even further. It is hard to compare the look of the game to Killzone 2, as the settings are very different. Killzone 2 looks dark and gritty, where Modern Warfare is set in bright but very torn down areas. Modern Warfare two has more color, making everything look realistically beautiful. However as usual the graphical quality suffers on Modern Warfare 2 when playing online, though it is hardly noticeable.

Online

Killzone 2’s online mode was highly addictive, it kept you playing trying to rank up and earn new weapons and ribbons. It also featured long engrossing battles, lasting around 25 minutes a piece. During these battles the game switches through the various different types of objectives, such as; Bodycount, Assassination, Capture and Hold, Search and Destroy, and Search and Destroy. Switching between different kind of objective based games while the match is still live made it very gripping, and it was a nice touch. It made you try very hard to be a team player, “OK we lost that last one, but now I am going to make sure we win this next objective”. Unfortunately Killzone 2’s online didn’t have the same longevity that Modern Warfare 2 does.

Modern Warfare 2’s online mode is so addictive that it becomes a daily routine for people to log on. Killzone 2’s online may be great, but Modern Warfare 2’s blows it out the water in every which way. There is just so much to achieve on Modern Warfare 2’s online, and it makes you eager to unlock as much as you can, as well as rank up and complete challenges. Modern Warfare 2 feels like an event every single time you log in to play, the competition aspect is just too high. You want to be a higher rank than all of your friends, you want to be that guy who scores the top spot every match, you want to have the best kill/death ratio. When you play Modern Warfare 2 online you feel like you are playing to accomplish something, not just for fun. This is something Killzone 2 missed out on.

Single Player Campaign

Neither game had a gripping storyline in the campaign mode, but what more do you expect from a console FPS? Killzone 2’s story felt consistent though, even though most people probably didn’t care because they just wanted to shoot the helgan’s. There was actually a point there though, there was a mission and there was a reason you was there on the battlefield. You came to know the main character Sev’s comrades, and you felt happy every time you were united with them during the fight. So overall there were enough story aspects there to keep you going, and that was enough.

Modern Warfare 2 is not set on any real world war that has happened. Which gave Infinity Ward a chance to be very creative with the games campaign mode. They did really well at it, but there just wasn’t enough for people to actually care for it. All people care about is shooting all of the opposing troops, and eventually getting to kill the ring leaders. We can’t forget though that Modern Warfare 2 contained one of the most controversial levels seen in a video game for a while. “No Russian” was a very interesting level, and the fact that you had the gun in your hand, with the decision to shoot or not, made it epic. It felt like a real choice, given the position that the in game character was actually in. The game did contain some memorable action sequences also, more so than Killzone 2. It did well to put you in different situations, and there were times where you really had to fight for survival. Modern Warfare 2 did it’s job in capturing the realities of war, and nothing more.

Now that I have explored some of the main aspects that make up these two First Person Shooter titles, I will now display some Pro’s and Cons of each game.

Killzone 2

Pro’s

- Amazing Graphics
- Realistic physics
- Great AI
- Enjoyable Online

Cons

- Learning curve for controls (mostly because of people being used to Call of Duty’s style of play)
- Some minor slow downs and feezing
- The multiplayer has no long term appeal
- No storyline co-op
- Not enough 2 player modes

Modern Warfare 2

Pros

- Great looking presentation
- Amazing action sequences
- Long term addictions to the online
- Spec Ops two player modes

Cons

- Nothing too gripping story wise
- No campaign co-op
- Some poor map layouts (They are too camper friendly)

I hope I have detailed enough differences within this article between the two games, It is very hard for me myself to choose the better game. Therefore I hope you all do the job for me and finish of this feature by answering the poll below. There is nothing better than letting the people answer a pending question, then there can be no arguments over the decision. So go ahead an vote, then return later to see what the word of the people is. Let’s just all be thankful to both Guerilla Games and Infinity Ward for bringing us the heat.

Lol wut...No long term appeal for the KZ2 online? That's probably why it's the fastest selling PS3 exclusive FPS ever and has troves of people still playing it. KZ2 blows MW2 out of the water in pretty much every category. Story, Graphics, Gameplay, AI, Realism, Technicality, and the fact that the game doesn't cater to noobs. Not catering to stupid 13 year olds isn't a "con" it's a "pro".

Anyone who has played both games knows MW2 is inferior to Killzone 2 in graphics, physics and all around multi-player game play(Warzone is far more fun than any MW2 game-type). MW2 has Spec Ops, had a better ad campaign, and a more strategic release time (around the holidays and just before the game awards).

MWF 2 wins in my book.

seeing as the game actually takes skill ... something alotta games and gamers alike lack these days i'd have to say KZ2 definitely gets the vote. The only time MW2 is fun for me is when i play OFFLINE SPLITSCREEN because the online is such complete garbage.

Every Kill in KZ2 is earned. That's why KZ2 is a more rewarding multiplayer experience. The only thing GG messed up on was the frills, I.E. more unlocks, more multiplayer options. Overall KZ2 is a better experince albeit not as enticing or as accessible as MW2

wow, im surprised people actually opened their eyes to the better game and not just choosed the more popular one. I must say that kz2 is a much better online game than mw2. Mw2 is NOT as fun as kz2 AT ALL! The main thing that makes kz2 much better than mw2, imo, is how it can make you feel soooooo tense when the game is close, which tend to happen alot. I've never felt really tense in a mw2 online match for some reason.

Also, the fact that you have all of the game modes bundled into one match adds a plus. Kz2 reintroduced me to how much fun you can have in a search & destroy or Capture and hold. I hardly ever play these game modes in mw2 because it becomes a camp fest and sooooo boring. And the kick ass and unique classes, along with the graphics, and you have one hell of a game.

If I can't get through the first line of your "article" without spotting a typo, I'm not reading the rest. Good fake journalism though, the world will always need janitors.
  • Gorilla Games would be proud of this poll.
  • ColeBeans
Wow, there must be a lot of PS3 fanboys in here because Killzone 2 was amazing but the multiplayer is not that good, and its kind of boring, MW2 story is great, graphics are ok, and the multiplayer is AMAZING!
  • P Lo
    i totally agree
  • Slick
the multiplayer for MW2 is the same boring shit.. they have stupid shit like double shotguns, simtex grenades where it blows up in like 2 seconds so u can't run away from it. There's so much things wrong with it, but i don't feel like reexplaining it all.. proved my point so many times and i don't feel like proving it again.
  • torni
MW2 online is not the same boring shit, you can even do co-op missions. Double shotties and simtex grenades take skill to use and don't make the player any better, you're just mad you got your ass beat in MW2 online.

    @Joe

It does happen. It's expected even. Online multiplayer always takes a hit somewhere, usually in the graphics/presentation department. It's a necessary evil. Developers comment on it all the time, trying to minimize the transition as much as possible. This is common knowledge.
  • JOEKILLA
    mw2 got KILLZOWNED!!!!!! lol!
  • torni
Judging by the amount of sales MW2 has over Killzone 2...Killzone 2 got Modern0wned!
  • cell989
Modern Warfare 2's list of complaints:

MW2 is for noobs thats why there is auto-aim on all weapons, thats why you are able to run 40mhp with 60lbs of equip. thats why you can camp all day and snipe people with a LMG. The fact that MW2 is full of "casual gamers" (noobs) means that noob-tubes, akimbo shotguns, knife slashers, glitchers, and killstreak boosters are the order of the day, all day, everyday.

Rarely will I encounter an actual team battle on MW2, 98% of the time everyone is out for themselves, and the whole "killstreak rewards" is just ridiculous. It was perfect in MW1, with only 3 rewards, now there is so much shit, it entices players to camp,noob-tube, and boost, just to get those rewards, that break the game once they are abused.
The spawning suck ass, and the guns have no realistic physics.

Than you get stupid perks that give you infinite running, extra damage, super fast reloading, extra slashing distance, silent steps, WTF? wasnt this game supposed to be REALISTIC.

Killzone2 pawns MW2, with its superb weapons physics, full manual aiming, awesome BALANCED classes, perfect spawning areas, great map, great clan support, dedicated servers, and 32ply support.
  • torni
If you don't want the perks, don't use them dumbass. They make the game more interesting. MW2 has 5x more online modes than KZ2. MW2 is perfectly balanced, campers do not last very long. If you want realism, join the Army.
  • mycool606
The main issue w/ MW2 is camping. I literally CANNOT play MW2 anymore because of camping. I just can't understand how camping could be fun for anyone. Doesn't anyone move around and try to actually shoot with tactical decisions instead of hiding behind a crate or a wall and wait for people to randomly pass by? It's so stupid and it ruins the game for. I love KZ2 because of the exact opposite reason: it makes you a team player. You have to take your movements into consideration and how they effect those around you, and your choices are always calculated ones, not random hipshots or random killing from campers who are lying in wait around the corner. And the story mode is a million times more exciting and has a higher replay value than MW2, and the votes tell that truth.
  • torni
If that's so, how come MW2 has by far more sales than Harry Potter had when it came out in theaters? MW2 storyline is addicting and it makes perfect sense, you just suck at it.
  • mycool606
Look Smartacus, the only reason you think that Modern Campfare is better is because I can make an obvious assumption that you are one of those pathetic campers who hide behind garbage cans and wait for a random player to pass by so you can shoot them in the back. And that's what players like you are: Garbage and pathetic garbage at that. And, it also shows your noob skills because the only way you can get a kill is by camping and just hoping, just hoping that the real players like me don't see you cowering in the corner like the sad, pathetic coward of a camper that you are. So, yeah, GENIUS, if you look at the votes above, then you'll possibly understand in that tiny brain of yours that Killzone 2 is a trillion times better than the Not-So-Modern Campfare. And by the way, if I suck at Modern Campfare 2, then why is it that I have 940 gamer points for the game and have beat it on hardened and veteran? I really don't find it necessary to respond to intellectual peons like you, but you needed to understand that it is people like you who ruin the online component of that game, and that is exactly why KZ2 is better because it fosters a sense of teamwork and the players movement is calculated and includes thoughts such as flanking and suppressive fire while covering moving team members. So, let me make things nice and sparkly clear for you: Killzone 2 is a better game and sales have nothing to do with that you braindead idiot. Until you are able to admit this simple truth, then you can keep having fun camping in the corner having sexual fantasies about your mother.
  • torni
LOL, smartacus? Doesn't that make me a fucking genius compared to you? Where did I mention I camp anywhere, oh snap I didn't and guess what Coolio: I DONT.

If Killzone 2 is so much better, how come MW2 has sold over 7 million and your little game has only sold a bit over a million? Epic fail on your end, I thought they teach the highest number wins in schools for retards...maybe you weren't special enough? Good job on getting 534753 gamer points, that just means you've never been inside of a girl that wasn't apart of your family.

Concerning sexual fantasies: Do not bring your incest habits into this discussion, hillbilly.
