It’s not really easy to find an original game in this generation, but EA Dice set forward to deliver an experience like no other with Mirror’s Edge. The first-person action adventure takes the gun out of your hands and instead gives you the moves of a runner. From building to building, pole to pole, you’ll be taking leaps of faith to rescue and clear your sisters name.

The city rooftops are your playground, you play through the eyes of Faith, a courier (called Runners) that delivers messages in a corrupted city. That same corrupted establishment ends up framing Faith’s sister for a murder she didn’t commit, and now Faith must rescue her sister. Unfortunately, just as fast as it is to explain the story, is as fast as it is to get through the game. The 9 chapters and a prologue will give you about 5 hrs of gameplay, plus a few more hours if your into the Speed Runs. The story is mainly told through short animated clips, which in my own opinion, isn’t that great of an art style compared to standard anime. Its safe to say that Mirror’s Edge isn’t really driven by its story but by the unique gameplay.

Slides, wall runs, leaps, and rolls, is what you’ll be doing to overcome several obstacles handed to you above these buildings. The game features a system called Runners Vision, which colors certain things red to show you where to go. Though it may seem easy to jump and grab on to a pole or building, it can actually be quite frustrating at times. Luckily, dying in the game is somewhat forgiving by just letting you restart at the nearest checkpoint which there are many of. Many times you will encounter “Blues” (cops) that will open fire on you for no reason, but you have a lackluster set of moves to disarm them with. The combat really isn’t that fun or exciting, besides being able to throw a few punches you can do a around 5 different hand-to-hand combat techniques which require you to press the Y button at a right moment, which can be really frustrating. To help you with that, Reaction Time is there, which is sort of like the normal bullet time seen in other games, which will slow time down giving you a better chance of disarming the enemy. You can always pick up a few different guns, although your not encouraged to use fire arms due to the fact that most guns only have one clip and then you just throw the gun away.

After seeing the trailers over the summer I would of thought the games theme song would of got annoying by now but no, its still a solid listen. Matter of fact, the whole soundtrack is pleasing, the music kicks in during its appropriate times, for instance, the tense music playing during tense times, the music really adds a significant touch during gameplay. Visually, the game looks great, although some textures can be not so pleasing. The cities architecture is what really uplifts Mirror’s Edge in the graphics department, the city alone is something good to look at. And thankfully, Mirror’s Edge doesn’t take place on the rooftops only, it takes you out of that environment and places you in the streets, train stations, and inside offices.

Mirror’s Edge is definitely an experience like no other. Although the experience is short lived, its still one you must take. The combat isn’t really quite where it should have been but the moves, which was the main purpose of the game, are there and they work perfectly. The trial and error of missing jumps or being killed by enemies can really become frustrating, but when your out of that scenario and you start building up momentum in the game, you don’t want to stop. The Mirror’s Edge experience is one that should be had by gamers by any means necessary whether it be a rental or a buy.
