The Mortal Kombat series is one of the few classic fighting franchises that still brings some friendly competition to your home after many years. Thankfully, developers are sometimes experimental with what they do in order to keep fans entertained, for instance, Marvel Vs. Capcom. Mortal Kombat has been going strong for over 15 years now, and creator Ed Boon has decided that Mortal Kombat needs a twist to keep it very well alive. So take the fighters of Mortal Kombat and have them go up against the superheroes and villains of the DC Universe. For the first time, Mortal Kombat makes its debut to the current-gen consoles. But after playing it can we finally put all the doubts to rest? An MK game rated T-for-Teen, less blood and gore, and wondering how Superman would even take damage?
Midway and the MK team have been real quiet when it came to asking just how the hell these two worlds would collide? For once, it’s actually great to know nothing about what’s going on in these two worlds because it leaves you to expect nothing. The story of Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is told within the two story modes in the game, one for each side. A merger is happening between the two worlds, both sides must fight in order to stop either side from invading, fueled with a little Rage which is causing a lot of the characters to fill up with rage and makes them temporarily evil. And this is why I said that it is better to not to know much when it comes to the story, its interesting to say the least but not all that great but fighting games aren’t known for their intriguing stories. But what is great, is the way the two stories tie in together perfectly, after playing the DC side first I understood more of it when I started playing the MK side. The story modes do run short, but after that your on to Arcade Mode, which lets you choose a fighter and beat the ladder of fighters like the old MK games. Unfortunately, after beating the game with a character all you get is an illustration and a narrator telling you the outcome of that particular fighter.

The MK team has tweaked the fighting system in this game. They’ve added ‘Klose Combat’, which lets you grab an opponent and box it out. That feature isn’t really as fun to watch as Free Fall Kombat is. In ‘Free Fall Kombat’, you’re able to fight your opponent during a long free fall and finish it off with a unique finish for each character. You’ll find yourself trying to knock an enemy off a building just to perform the combination of moves, likewise in ‘Test Your Might’, which has a new meaning to the phrase. During ‘Test Your Might’ you’ll be tapping all four buttons rapidly while you tackle your opponent through several walls in hopes of taking away a good chunk of his health. But the MK team really tried to out do themselves in the combo department, in MK Vs. DC every character can be played in its own casual way, but this game offers some really great ways to pull off combos, combos that you wouldn’t even think could be done. Honestly, I couldn’t even pull off most of the combos in the game, which you can try to pull off in the ‘Kombo Challenge’ Mode. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is easy to play, but hard to master, which is great for casual gamers who are just going to pick this up to play as Batman or Joker, but also great for the hardcore MK fanatics who want to practice and achieve hard maneuvers.
With the addition of DC Comics, MK Vs. DC was toned down in the blood and gore department in order to keep that T-rating in tack. Luckily, the game does have blood in it, not as much as we would of liked but its there, and best of all the game does have Fatalities. All characters have two fatalities but all DC superheroes have Heroic Brutalities which doesn’t offer a death of satisfaction but does hand off an ass whooping of a life time. The fatalities aren’t as brutal but some are still pretty good and still offer some satisfaction when actually doing them.
With all the fun you’ll be having whooping some ass with The Joker it wont be hard to ask yourself why isn’t such and such in this game? Personally, I think the characters in the game are a great choice but I can’t get over the fact that Reptile nor Johnny Cage are even in this game considering their MK classic fighters, same can be said for the DC side. The game also has an Extras menu which only gives you a brief bio of the characters and a chance to re-watch an ending, and that is all. The game does offer some online play, which from my experiences turned out good for the most part with little to no lag.

Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe was set to deliver an amazing fighting mash-up between two of the best known names in gaming and comics. But to do so, things needed to be tweaked and changed, some for the better and some for the worse. You might of never asked yourself, who would win between Batman and Scorpion? But the fact is gamers love mash-ups. This game is someones dream come true, and if it wasn’t, then its still a game worth trying for the simple fact that it is Mortal Kombat.

Twitter and Facebook users do not need too do this.

Nice review. I didn’t know the combat system was deep with a lot of combos. I think I really might pick this game up now if I trade in some games. Gonna get it used of course. I don’t wanna pay anymore than $40 for it.
Good shit Edward..MK VS DC is definitely in my top 5 games this year…even thought you’re cheap as hell online son
