Onlive to Change the Face of Gaming

The hottest news out of GDC seems to be swarming around a new game service named “Onlive.” This service has been in development for 7 years by WebTV founder Steve Perlman and former Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey. Onlive is a service that will allow the user to stream AAA Online titles through your internet connection to either your home PC, Mac, or even your television. This service seems to be very interesting as the quality of gameplay you have is not limited to the hardware on your pc but only your internet connection. The secret to this technology is that the actual game is hosted on the highest-end Onlive servers and only small controller input and Video data is actually sent through the internet. As long as you have between a 1.5 meg and 5 meg connection a user should be able to run any game without lag. The quality of your video however will depend upon the speed of your connection lower speed connections will be in standard definition while higher end connections will produce High Definition quality video. Onlive already has a powerhouse of confirmed video game publishers including: Atari, CodeMasters, Eidos, Electronic Arts, Epic, Take 2. THQ, Ubisoft, and Warnerbros. Onlive is scheduled for release Winter 2009.

This new technology seems very promising as long as it delivers as advertised. Lag will cause a complete failure of this product. Gaming – Consoles = No Fanboys.

Would you subscribe to this service?
