Microsofts Xbox 360 has been plagued with the ongoing hardware failures, caused by the infamous “Red Rings Of Doom”. However, this year alone I have been through two Playstation 3 consoles (about to receive the third), and my Xbox 360 has yet to even “rrod” once.

Three months ago I received a replacement Playstation 3, which I had to pay £145 for. My original Playstation 3; which I bought in April of 2007, decided to never turn back on again. Instead it flashed a green light for 2 seconds then turned into a flashing red light. The adviser on the Sony technical support telephone service explained that the fault could be due to numerous hardware failures. Seeing as I was out of warranty I had no choice but to pay £145 for a replacement 60gb Playstation 3.

So here I am three months later; I turn on my Playstation 3 to play some Metal Gear Solid 4, but then a friend of mine sends me a message. I then begin to reply when the unthinkable happens, my Playstation 3 cuts off and presents me with that same flashing red light I was presented with just over three months ago. I’m sure you can imagine my frustration and panic at this time as I really shouldn’t have to fork out another £145 for this B.S. I dial the number for the Sony technical support line and tell the respondent my situation.

Luckily, I do not have to pay another £145 because the warranty on the replacement system lasted 3 months itself, and I will be receiving another replacement Playstation 3 60gb tomorrow. However that does not make me happy.

For one, why have I had the same problem with Playstation 3 twice in just 3 months? Shouldn’t I be expecting my Xbox 360 to be giving me this kind of hassle, as they are notoriously known to break down frequently? This just goes to show that it’s not only Microsoft’s system that has hardware issues to work on.

Secondly, I was very displeased to know that It may take up to a total of six weeks for me to receive my Metal Gear Solid 4 blu-ray disk back. That was one of my favorite games, and your telling me I have to wait up to Six weeks to get it back?

Not only that, but you must ship the console with your hard drive (Unless you replaced it), which means this is the 2nd time in 3 months that I have lost all my game data and will have to start every single game again, as well as install every single patch.

As somebody who prefers the Playstation 3 over the Xbox 360, I can honestly say I am unhappy with Sony on this issue. It would be easier to pay for a warranty, but at this time I cant afford it, and I certainly cant afford to fork out another £145 should this happen again outside of the 3 month window.

So to all those out there that bash Microsoft for all their hardware failures, you can not rule out the fact that Sony have hardware issues of their own.

You are pretty lucky. I have been through 3 xbox’s and I just got back my launch ps3. I just wish they didn’t charge me 150 to fix it.

Your lucky I’m on my 7 xbox in less than 2 years, I’ve had everything go wrong at least twice, ring of death, disk read errors, you name it I’ve had it. When I do finally get my xbox 360 back for the 7th time I’m selling it and buying a ps3

My launch ps3 still works fine (though got a bit louder),
my launch 360 had RROD 3 times, my elite once.

as a gamer i love both consoles, but ps3 is definitely more accurate. all my friends ps3 still work, but i got no friend that hasnt had RROD at least once -_-

you are simply out of luck man,
    greetz from sweden!

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’m on my 3rd PS3 as well. Bought a 60Gb launch console and within’ 6 months I had it exchanged due to *many* games locking up…constantly. Sony agreed to be pro-active and replace the console.

I got the new console, and the games still froze. It appears that the PS3 software itself is unstable, pfft, figures, I suppose that’s why so many firmware updates to increase game stability. The replacement died about a year later. This time, it really, really died. The video went. Basically the system would lock up and blue/green blocks would appear all over the screen. There are some pictures on the Official forums if anyone wants to go digging to find them. And I had to pay about 200 bucks for the repair. (I’d be damned to pay for a new PS3)

Since then, I bought a 360 in January of this year and I can count the time the system has locked up on one hand…and I put some serious hours into my system. And let’s say it *does* RROD, Microsoft has assured me that if it happens within 3 years, I get a replacement. What more can I ask, I won’t get a similar deal from Sony, that’s for sure.

As a die hard Sony fan before this generation, I was all in, but now, I truly believe that the changes at Sony have been for the worse, not better. (I miss Phil and Ken :’( )

I should note that I’m Canadian and am not treated as equally as my American counterpart when it comes to Sony. No video store yet for Canada, we’re left out of pretty much every promotion on the Blog, and even our collectors editions differ on some games from our US brothers and sisters to the south (worse). Microsoft, on the other hand, has an entire series dedicated to Canada (Made In Canada), and we’re included in pretty much all contests.

I’ve lost pretty much all my faith in Sony and the Delaystation 3. I’ve told (and showed), my friends just how bad the PS3 is and have encouraged more than one to get a 360 over the PS3.

Spending the money Sony wants for their console for the 5 decent exclusive games they have over the multitude of decent, if not awesome, games for the 360, and when the vast majority of multiplatform games simply look and perform better than their PS3 counterparts, is craziness. The inability to let go the “fanboi” inside was the hardest thing for me to do, but after shedding my old skin, I’ll ne’er look back.

    That’s my nickle ninety-five.

If your Ps3 led starts to flash red after the yellow light there is no way to power it on and backup your data tulip..Your data is lost forever as Sony will confirm..Your PS3 Hdd is married to your Ps3 and wont qwork even if inserted into another Ps3..FACT…Google it and for doubters call your closest repair centre and ask them…Also clear video is posted on my facebook profile..kurt sass.. south africa….We have two pS3’s as shown in the video…A 60gb Ylod and 80gb which is fine….I consider myself a Playstation fanboy but the truth remains..The 60gb Ylod’s more commonly than we think…or Sony says…..

  6. Joeki11a says:

^33 percent vs 2 percent isn’t all the time dummy…

Swiff, did you keep flipping the switch in the back or

    something?.

Don’t do that, Sony says to keep it on stand by 24/7, also did you play

in a not so ventilated room?, PS3s specially the 60 gigs need to be in

a cool area because those have alot of hardware inside.

Also I think you should had made the article when you calm down, you

didn’t even go into the fact 360s got 33 percent failure rate and the

PS3 got like 2 percent, so this YLOD deal isn’t a huge deal but it

sucks though and keep in mind it happens to old 2006 models.

  7. Olle says:

PS3= 2 % to break once and xbox 360: 30 % to break once in the xbox 360´s “life”.

And you have been to unluck guy!

    • Carl Daniel says:

a 360 is 30% likely to break? where the fuck did you get that figure from?

its very rare for a 360 NOT to break

  8. TheTruth says:

All the people that i know has it PS3 working perfectly, in the other hand i know friend that has the fourth Xbox360 because Red Ring Problem…

I dont know men if you are telling the truth because the PS3 is a very reliable console, only about 2% fails, in the other hand X360 has a 33% chance to fail.

If you write this article tring to prove something i thing better see the number that i said, and them think again which console has better quality.

  9. Kurt says:

2% of 24 mil consoles is still nearly 500000 unlucky people(I reckon its closer to 1mil) like myself who must pay to fix a manufacture defect…..Xbox 360 failure may = 33% but its still fixed free for three yrs…..

GAY BOX LOVERSSSSSSS, GO SUCK IT UP, MY PS3 NEVER HAS HAD A PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT IT (OVER TWO YEARS AGO)…

  11. abcd says:

just an fyi for the author, it is called RED RING OF DEATH, not DOOM…

  12. JO says:

Sucks that both consoles have problems but they do. luckily ive had my 360 since launch day and it has not rrod’d yet. (knocks on wood)

  13. Nikki says:

It’s been a lot more common. It happened to my Aug. 2007 80Gb model. Sony wants $150 to fix it after I paid $500 just on the system not to mention all the games, DLC, and stuff for HOME. I only had it 18 months. 6 months out of warranty. If it happened to you, there is a law firm starting a class-action lawsuit. Go to this website http://www.lawyerseek.com/Practice/Consumer-Protection-C21/Playstation-3-Yellow-Light-of-Death-P212/ Sony truly doesn’t care for it’s customers.

  14. tarantula45 says:

i got my ps3 back 10 days ago and it died lats night ive sent it to sony 3 times in 2 months,on the first repair the console came back still broken, there repair techs suck balls

  15. ps3 bundle says:

im on my third ps3, all fixed under warranty fortunately, but im not impressed. you guys who it happened to out of warranty, i feel for you, you shouldn’t have to go out and spend $500 on a peice of equipment that fails after 18 months because of a design fault and be expencet to pay for it, as it’s not due to “general wear and tear” it’s due to neglegence by sony in developing the console in the first place
