There was this rumor floating around for a while now, that there would be some form of emulation in a update that would enable the PS3’s without backwards compatibility to play PS2 games. I’m not even sure where the rumor started, but we brought it up back up on the recent Co Op Podcast and decided to hit Sony up for some answers. So rather than chop up his words here is a direct quote from the email:

Thanks for your email

When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games.  I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3.  At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3.  I think you will agree that the list of 1st party exclusive games for PS3 is growing quickly and the quality of them is great.  Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, GT5: Prologue and the up-coming Killzone 2 show that we are very serious about bringing exciting, innovative and fun games to PS3.

Many thanks

Well, that’s one rumor killed. Probably a few dreams caught in the gunfire as well.

Don't you just love Phony-Sony's New slogan for the PS3 Slim...
"It does everything" yeah, except play Sony made PS2 games!

The advert slogan should read: " Sony PS3 Doesn't play PS2 games that you already bought from us, so buy, buy, buy Uncharted 2 ... Surprised.

And another thing: "early odopters" with BC can go suck it, you upperclass bastards. Why does Sony Entertainment Still REFUSE to put back in BC for the common people! FUCK Sony and their PR department

The only reason why I continued to by the Sony gaming systems was because of its backwards compatibility. There have been so many other new systems available in the last few years, and I have chosen Sony over them all. But now I see no reason to stay loyal to a company that changes one of its product's best redeeming features. Screw Sony, I'm switching to Xbox.

217 ps2 games to be exact. N i would appreciate if i had a reliable next gen system to count on, when the time comes to play em.. SONY, IM CALLING YOU OUT!! SUPPORT THE CLASSICS!!

i dont think i should pay for two systems that have the potential to do the same thing. Its absolutley pointless. If sony expects to keep loyal fans and consumers, then sony needs to learn to appreciate and support the fans. I personally own hundreds of ps2 games, n have been saving for a new ps3. However the reverse compatability issues are upsetting me. I have Boycott all my sony merchandise. Why pay so much for a ps3 that dont play any REAL sony games. I understand sony wishes to move on to next gen games. I do not believe that path should include neglecting the support of classic sony games. To truly be "Next Gen" they should take into account that having a system capable of playing nearly anything weather old, or new can be just as revolutionary as the introduction of new formulas for gameplay. It can bring more support to sonys cause if they agree to support the classics.

    Ok, good news.

Who cares, when we all want new high definition exciting games ?

I think the one who care most are the people who have illegal copies of ps2 games, dreaming to use them on a ps3 ..

Well, buy a ps2 for that, it is so cheap nowadays.

When the PS2 came out, I sold my PSX to help pay for it since I could still play all of my PSX games. And I'm sure alot of people do that. With the still steep price of the PS3, and popularity of the PS2, it would be nice if you could do the same thing. More people would consider buying PS3.

I, on the other hand, don't have a PS2 because of hurricane Ike. I still have a bunch of PSX and PS2 games I haven't beaten yet (heck, I haven't even opened FFXII yet). But at the same time, I want a PS3. So which do you think I'm gonna to go with first: The $100 system I already have 30 [good] games for, and tons of others I can buy for as little as $5, or the $500 system that I have no games for, and will have pay $60 each for the few games I would want???

I'm now thinking of buying a PS3, lack of backwards compatibility is a problem for me, I already got 3 consoles (Xbox360, ps2, Wii) and a PC hooked up to my TV; would have been nice to have just moved the ps2 away.
Meh, guess I need to buy a hdmi splitter or something.
  • Captain Falcon
    This is dumb.
    Really.

There're a lot of people who would buy the PS3 if it would have backward compatibility.

    That sucks.

If they're REALLY not planning on bringing back backward compatibility, they should AT LEAST drop the price.

Sony seams to forget that the backward compatibility was one of the main reasons why so many people bought the PS2...
  • Fmills u dont want it, I promise. You should just try to be my friend :-)
  • hiryu
If there are no plans of PS2 bacward compability for what reason Sony maked survey with PS2 backward option ?!
It was one of the most voted options and what?
    It's not even in plans!!
SONY for what puropse do u ask us since u don't give a sh!t about our choices ?!
  • Fplus
Well great. Sony likes taking Big dump on your chest. While Microsoft make billions and keeps giving their users what they want. For... Free
  • HitmanAgent47
Lol, WTF, HIGH QUALITY GAMES GT5 DEMO AND PACIFIC RIFT? 82% AVERAGELY ON GAMERANKINGS, SAME WITH 87% RESISTANCE 2, MEDIOCRE.

WITH SUCH LOW QUALITY NOT AAA GAMES IT'S TIME TO BRING BACK BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. I LOST MY 60 GIG PS3 TO THE YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH AND NOW I HAVE THIS NEWER SKU INSTEAD, NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILTY, A HUGE MISTAKE.
  • David Macphail
I'm assuming they'll bring PS2 emulation to the PS3 once the PS2 is officially laid to rest.
  • For goodness sake man!

I need to play God of War, Tekken and Devil May cry! (killzone too).

Well..if they will drop the backwards thing, then reduce the farking price for the ps3!!!
  • come on seven hog. pages and pages was more like one thread. we can call of the peace treaty and go at it for old time sakes.
  • Mark
PS2 compatibility was a reward for early adopters. If you missed the train, you need to get over it an move on, there are far too many great PS3 games this year you will be missing out on otherwise.
  • b-cro
I know a few 30,000 people who would go back and play SOCOM 2 if it (A) wasn't ruined by code 9 and (B) was available to be played on PS3 or could be DL'd from the PS Store
  • Yo when this dude come out of hiding damn i miss the days i use to clown yo ass for pages and pages.
