The Sony Playstation 3 Will Shine In 09

As you may have seen, my colleague Donnie B just posted an article explaining the reasons he feels that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will dominate in 2009 (see it here). Although I agree it could very well happen, I think that people are underestimating what the Playstation 3 could do in 2009. So here is why I Think the Playstation 3 will shine in 2009, bear in mind that I am not saying it will take the number one spot. But I do believe that based on these points Sony’s Playstation 3 will shine this year, way more than it has done previously.
The Games
It’s going to be extremely hard for Sony not to have a good year with all the games that are promised this year. Not only is Killzone 2 almost a month away, but we also have the likes of God Of War 3, Infamous, DC Universe Online, Gran Turismo 5, and Uncharted 2 to look forward to. God Of War 3 and Gran Turismo alone are enough to sell a great load of hardware for Sony.
Donnie mentioned that Microsoft may begin to acquire exclusives, but that is only because they are forced to. Playstation 3 already has a huge amount of exclusives that you can not find anywhere else, and this is why the argument that Playstation 3 has no games is now void.
Home
It may not be much now, and the hype may have died down. But do not sleep on home, it has the potential to truly become the second life of gaming. As more business’s begin to embrace home and use it as a tool for business then expect the popularity to grow. especially expect some surprises to pop up around the time of GDC or E3 maybe, as there has been previous talk about bringing these conferences to home in some way. Remember that home is still a beta and is far from complete, imagine what the application will offer by the time they finish it completely.
Price Drop
Defiantly expect a price drop coming from the Playstation 3 this year, hell I think they might possibly do it twice. No promises there though. What I can promise however is that as soon as people hear the word price drop, they will grab their wallets, get their money together and go to gamestop. Look how successful Microsoft was with their price drop, the thing is it doesn’t even have to be a significant price drop. As long as people know they’re getting the product for cheaper, it is reason enough to buy it.
Trophies
My good friend Donnie also talked about Xbox 360 achievements expanding. But though there has been no official word on achievements expanding, Sony have already stated that they want to offer more with trophies. And already I feel that trophies hold more value than achievements, because you have to play extra hard to get those silver or gold ones. I have seen people with a crate load of bronze trophies, but not a silver or gold to their name. I have yet to even see anyone with a Platinum trophy. Therefore trophies is a great way to reward hardcore gamers who put their heart and soul into a game. So imagine how Sony could integrate the trophies system into something like Home and reward their gamers based on how they are performing in games. This will ensure that, if home does get even more popular, then it will urge people to buy more games too.
PSN
With what I have already said about Home and Trophies I don’t even need to expand on this too much. You have to ask yourself, how can you go wrong with a service that is free? sure some games may have server issues from time to time, but you aren’t paying a dime to use the service that Sony is offering to you. And you still have access to everything they offer such as Home, the Psn Store, the Movies, and playing online with all your friends. Also expect it to get even better, with more firmware updates which will add on to the experience.
In reality this will be a great year for gaming all together, I am sure we will all be satisfied with whatever our console preference is. We all have a lot to look forward to, however I am totally sure that this is Playstation 3’s year to shine, even if they fail to take a lead.

PS3 does have some good exclusives on the way in Killzone 2, God of War 3, and Infamous, which i will pick them all up, but there is no catching up to the 360 Powertran. Time for Sony to got back to the drawing board and get ready for the next Generation.

I agree with ladet, PS3 is a great console, but it will never catch the 360, MS was on point with almost all their decisions this gen, well played MS. Sony is still trying to find an identity for the PS3, is it a movie player or a game console, even they don’t know yet.

trophies and achievements:
you can’t compare the two. trophies aim for the hardcore gamers. they want their efforts to be recognized. trophies show real skill. but do casual gamers want to show it off like that? Microsoft claimed to aim in casual gamers this 2009. achievements are right on the track since it considers casual gamers. having more points just meant you play more, there is no discrepancy as to your skill. this makes achievements open for anybody, while trophies for those achievers only.
games:
it is true ps3 has a better line-up. xbox360 can catch up with announcements early this year, but it might not be able to beat the many aaa titles of sony. but should this down many xbox360 gamers? no! there are lots of multi-platform games to play which are really really great. COD:MW2, marvel ultimate alliance 2, bionic commando, RE5, SF4, and lots more! you’re gonna have your hands full with all the games, unless you’re rich or a pirate (modded xbox).
price:
i read it before that ps3 can’t get a price drop till summer. so I guess it’s possible. I also saw a prediction that ps3 would beat xbox360 this year. but, xbox360 will still be top in accumulated sales.
in conclusion:
trophies = achievers; achievements = everybody.
games for 2009 = xbox360 ps3 (till summer, when they get a price drop)

Of course PS3 will never catch up to 360. The 360 had a year head start. Keep in mind the sales of the PS3 is just as good as the 360 was last year. On average PS3 has been selling around 8 – 9 million a year, now at about 18mil consoles sold. Microsoft just hit the 28mil sold mark (they were at about 25mil before the price drop) so they are selling about 9.3mil per year. If Sony can get in a price drop and boost their adverts they can get their sales close to the 360’s.

Not, PS3 will dominate in ‘09, or PS3 will kick the 360’s ass in ‘09 or ‘09 will be the year of the PS3.
None of that. Simply, 2009 will be the year that will live up to the concept that Sony marketed so heavily so many years ago.
In 2009 there will be a larger number of great Playstation games that do more to justify the PS3’s Blu Ray disc drive.
There will be more Playstation 3 games that utilize the Cell Processor in ways that set them apart from what may be considered the industry standard.
Home will have more than 12 minutes worth of content.
I dislike how the comments section displayed how ignorant so many users were of this articles focus and how eager everyone was to go straight to versus mode.
Those consoles are shipped not sold and many like 70% of that number arent even working because of the RROD.
PS3 is just getting better and better as time goes by like a good wine i cant say the same about the xbox 360 though the 2009 line up of games sucks.
I own all 3 systems but the 360 is gathering dust. PS3 just ‘feels’ right. The line-up for this year is almost climax-inducing. What a lot of people forget when it comes to sales, is that MANY people still have a PS2 as their 1st console. Also PS2’s are still selling rather strongly. When these late-adopters decide to upgrade, I’m pretty sure most of them will choose the PS3.
The 360 is a wonderful system apart from it’s technical defects, proprietary hard drive, proprietary wi-fi adaptor, price of live & crap achievement system.
WOW simply wow..just passin thru to read the PS3 side of things and this is what it comes to. here we have an xbot in disguise and a bunch of very baised fanboy comments. so i’m guessin when most of you that are not knockin on the 360 going undercover in the 360 forums are hiding out politickin about the 360 on the ps3 forums NICE…lol and most of you act like all the stuff you get for free specially PSN, the firmware updates, XMB and other features dont cost sony money and it does and buyin a movie or two on PSN doesn’t cover sonys loses if anything its a reinvestment move everytime.
by the way i think killzone will be sick and I AGREE LETS SEE SOME MARKETING SONY!!
now lets get back to what matters most the games
the thing about god of war 3 is, it’s got a tentative release date for DECEMBER 09. . . Games that big ALWAYS get pushed back and this one will be no different. So one of the MAIN Games everyone is creaming over for 09, won’t actually be in 09.
I think that Sony focused more on blu-ray than anything else during the rise of the ps3. now that the blu-ray has been established and seems to be doing very well, I think that the focus for 09 is the games.

I agree that God of war may not even be released for 09. I’m willing to wait on quality. fine by me. even if it doesn’t come out, the ps3 has a solid list of dope shit.
I kind of agree with you Swift but if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there does it make a sound? If no one really pays attention to the PS3 and responds by buying their big (and exclusive) titles then will anyone really say it shined?
The PS3 to me is confused and doesn’t know where it wants to product place itself. I see commercials about downloading movies. I see commercials about Blu Ray. I see commercials about LittleBigPlanet. It just seems scattered to me. They need to have one commercial that boasts about everything the machine can do in a 60 second piece that wows. I think that would help them tremendously. We’ll see if they get it in 2009.

i originally purchased a 360 and it was pretty good then i saved up my money and got a ps3 and honestly the ps3 is sooo much better i love it i was so tired of the 360’s nickel and dime bullcrap
the ps3 just has so much more to offer i mean hell i can watch youtube order movies play my blu rays go online and pwn some people and not have to pay some damn fee on top of my internet bill
plus mgs4 is just pure awesomness and also in order to get all of this with the 360 you have to fork almost the same amount of money plus you cant forget your live fees so really the ps3 is cheaper in the long run
you can even run an os on it if your comp screws up the ps3 is a masterpiece and the only reason it isnt on top is because stupidity is a plague the wii being a top seller proves it
and b4 anyone starts screaming fanboy take in to consideration that i loved the original xbox over the ps2 but one thing i am guilty of is being a fanboy of value and performance and the ps3 fits into both catagories imo ^.^
as of feb. sales for ps3 were down but i still believe the ps3 is goin to do just fine in the long run. people are so quick to write it off and praise 360 but people dont realize that 360 had a 1 yr head start obviously they are going to be ahead for quite some time b4 sony catches up especially since the ps3 is a completely different animal than 360 its far far more complex piece of hardware which is the main reason its struggled thus far. 360 is great for what it does and titles like Gears of War and Gears 2 are masterpieces (Halo 3 In my opinion is overrated) but given time sony will catch up and then we will truly see a “Console war” but dont sleep on Sony. God Of War 3 And Gran Turismo 5 alone should be proof of this give it time thats all im sayin
