UFC 96 in Columbus, Ohio was a great experience. The atmosphere was electric from the no name under card fights to the main-event. This was a unforgettable experience and you can definitely look forward to me catching a couple more UFC events.
From the time I touched down in Columbus I could tell how large an event it would be. The UFC 96 Fight Card held all three of the newly announced fighters for THQ’s UFC 2009: Undisputed. These newly announced fighters were Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga, Brandon “The Truth” Vera, and Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove.
Ganzaga is a huge up and coming heavyweight carrying a lot of hype. His hype wasn’t nearly enough to stop the Undefeated Shane Carwin from knocking that candy ass out at 1:09 in the 1st round.
“The Truth” Vera is a veteran of the Octagon who is trying to get acqainted to fighting at his new weight of 205 coming off a lost from Kieth Jardine who was fighting in the main-event. Vera seems to be getting quite acqainted as he made easy work of Micheal Patt with a TKO in the second round.
Kendal Grove has been one of my favorite fighters since winning the widely popular Ultimate Fighter show. He definitely proved that him winning the show and being a success in the UFC wasn’t a fluke with a 1st round knock out of Jason Day.
If you can’t tell, the motto of the night was KNOCK OUT. The Knock Out of the night goes to another veteran of the Ultimate Fighter series. Matt “THE HAMMER” Hamill gets the KO of the night award as he introduced Mark Munoz’s temple to his ankle bone with a shot I’m sure you heard in your sleep. Hamill did a little dance, talked to Joe Rogan, entertained the crowd, communicated with his interpreter, played a little Xbox 360, and made love to a Fat Chick before Munoz was even awoke. This knockout got a little scary for a second as Munoz got fitted with a neck brace and they also brought out the stretcher. Munoz awoke right before he was rolled onto the stretcher and walked out the ring which definitely impressed me. I didn’t plan on him waking up till about this time next week.
The main-event pitted two previously annouced UFC 2009: Undisputed fighters. This match was between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine. This was a decent fight that lead to a grossly one sided fight won by the Ex-Champ Rampage.
The night ended with a faceoff and trash talk between Rampage and “Sugar” Rashad Evans. This will be the next fight for the Light-Heavy Weight title.
The night was electric and filled with what the fans love “KO’s”. Columbus was a great host for the event. The experience was great now check out a couple pictures I took below.
