Rumors have hit the Internet today, revealing that Heavy Rain will most likely not make it in 2009. Although it has not been made official, this article is to reflect my reasons of why I think it would be the best move. Most websites are looking at this as a huge let down, but I for one think that this is the best thing for Sony to do and I have my reasons.
For one, regardless of what anyone might say, Sony have an amazing line up of first party exclusives already this year. Releasing too many high profile exclusives in the same year would not be a very wise move. We have already had Killzone 2, Infamous is this week and we still apparently have yet to see God Of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted 2 and M.A.G this year. I believe Heavy Rain wont be the only exclusive Sony game to be pushed back to 2010, as having such a strong line up of games presumably coming out all around the same time will be utter chaos for Sony. Not only that, but none of the games will truly get the shine they deserve, as the market will be flooded with too many high profile games in the same period.
Another reason is, with Sony’s current financial state they will need some sort of assurance for revenue in 2010. Having such games as Heavy Rain, DC Universe Online, and possibly M.A.G (I am almost sure this will be pushed back to next year), appear in 2010 will ensure that they have some huge money makers up their sleeves for the next fiscal year. Also, they can use all the extra time to market the hell out of these games so that when they do arrive, the whole world will be excited to get them in their hands.
The final reason is that Sony must also consider their competition, they cant just flood the market blindly with all these high profile exclusives. Sony more than ever need to apply strategy, although I believe Sony has the strongest line up this year, they cant just discard the competition. Microsoft have yet to reveal their whole line up for the rest of the year, but we know Halo ODST is on it’s way which will be a huge seller.
With that being said, Heavy Rain being pushed back to 2010 is not such a let down as many people out there are making it seem. Gaming is a business, and the sooner we all start remembering that, the sooner we will all understand when issues such as this arise.

Twitter and Facebook users do not need too do this.

yo swiff, grreat article man! I gotta say I agree with you regarding the Heavy Rain delay. Sony has a huge lineup and I’d hate for their new IP’s to suffer the Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space effect. Also I’d like to see just what M$ and Nintendo got up their collective sleeves.

Sony’s lineup for ‘09 is starting to slip. 3 games people was expecting this year (God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, and Heavy Rain) wont come out til next year. I was really looking forward to this game too.
