Would You Like A GTA Every Year? Too Bad, Not Going To Happen

And I’m glad. Games taking that annual release route are hurting the brand quality fast. Take two understands the simple concept of building hype and getting people excited. If a game comes out every year, why should I be excited? Especially since it can result in different studios juggling years back and forth, and/or a badly developed game due to time constraints. The smartest thing Activision did to keep the brand quality of Modern Warfare was segmenting it from all Call Of Duty franchises as a whole. Modern Warfare 2 instead of Call Of Duty 6 was a great move. In Take Two’s case they’ll just hold out on Grand Theft Auto long enough to get the fans asking questions and creating dialogue around what the next title will be like.
“We don’t feel that GTA ought to be an annualised franchise,” Take Two chairman Strauss Zelnick told investors during an earnings call.
“There’s a balance between how long it takes to develop such an incredible title… and how long you wait for the [customer's] appetite to be both satisfied and whetted for the next title. That’s something I think the company has done well.”
