This is one statement which may have JRPG fanatics in an uproar. Yoichi Wada has expressed that the team behind Final Fantasy XIII may go on to develop games more suited to the current generation.
“I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special, and that it’s going to be well received by the audience,” Wada said.
“But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some ‘next generation’ forms of play.”
Well Wada, isn’t Final Fantasy XIII itself supposed to be a next generation approach? I think he is either admitting that current JRPG’s are dated, or saying that he wishes to create more of a western friendly type of game. Which is very interesting.
“I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they’re strictly catering to the particular audience they have now,” he added.
The current audience they have now are the type that enjoys an outstanding, hardcore Japanese RPG experience. Also every addition to the Final Fantasy franchise is different. So my question is how much different does he want the next games from Square Enix to be?
Whatever he may mean from these quotes, they are very interesting and deserve attention from fellow Final Fantasy fanatics.
Final Fantasy XIII is due for release March 9th in North America and Europe.
